Executive Summary

Stephen W. Foster is Chief Revenue Officer of ModMed — Modernizing Medicine — the healthcare technology company whose electronic health record and practice management software is built separately for each medical specialty rather than sold as one general-purpose system. He owns the full go-to-market and revenue function: sales, solution engineering, customer expansion, sales development, revenue operations, enablement and partnerships all sit under him. That breadth is the point of the role as he describes it, since his stated priority across roughly 25 years in software sales has been tight coordination across the entire customer lifecycle and predictable, efficient scale rather than quarter-by-quarter heroics. He came to healthcare from data infrastructure: seven years at Qlik, rising to Executive Vice President for Global Accounts and Americas Sales, and more than twelve years before that at Oracle.

Career Highlights

  • Serves as Chief Revenue Officer of ModMed, leading go-to-market, revenue and growth strategy across the whole commercial organisation including post-sale expansion and partnerships.
  • Reached Executive Vice President for Global Accounts and Americas Sales at Qlik during a seven-year tenure that spanned both domestic and international senior leadership roles.
  • At Qlik, carried responsibility not only for sales but for solution engineering, business and technology partnerships and value engineering — an unusually wide commercial remit.
  • Spent more than twelve years at Oracle in management roles within its technology division, including as Area Vice President of the integration solutions business for US enterprise accounts.
  • Brings around 25 years in enterprise software sales, with a record centred on building scale that is efficient and forecastable.

Professional Journey

Foster spent the first long stretch of his career at Oracle, more than twelve years in its technology division. He held a series of management roles there, the most senior of them Area Vice President for the integration solutions business covering US enterprise accounts — middleware and data integration, sold to the largest customers, which is a technical sale conducted with architects as much as with buyers.

He then moved to Qlik, the data and analytics cloud company, where he stayed about seven years and held a succession of domestic and international senior leadership roles. His responsibilities there extended well beyond a sales number to include solution engineering, business and technology partnerships and value engineering, and he rose to Executive Vice President for Global Accounts and Americas Sales. The combination — global accounts plus a region, with pre-sales and partnerships attached — is the kind of remit that prepares someone to run a whole revenue function rather than a sales team.

At ModMed he does exactly that. The company sells specialty-specific electronic health records, practice management and revenue cycle software to medical practices, a market in which the buyer is a physician-owner or a practice administrator and the switching costs are severe. Foster’s organisation covers sales, solution engineering, customer expansion, sales development, operations, enablement and partnerships, and his own framing of his approach — efficient, thoughtful and predictable scale, with tight coordination across the entire customer lifecycle — fits a business where most of the lifetime value of an account is realised after the first signature rather than at it. He is the successor in the role to Brian Boyd, who had been named ModMed’s Chief Revenue Officer in July 2019.
