Professional Journey
In 2012 Tolou, Van den Heuvel and Smeulders were running an online store that sold phone accessories. Shipping was the painful part, so they built their own tool to handle it. Other e-commerce merchants had the same problem, and the tool became Sendcloud. Silicon Canals, interviewing the founders in 2023, noted that they were in their early twenties when they started.
Sendcloud grew into a multi-carrier shipping platform, with integrations covering more than 100 carriers and thousands of shipping methods for online shops in Europe. Between 2020 and 2022 it raised about EUR150 million, including a Series C led by SoftBank Vision Fund. Its own site now describes a team of more than 400 and more than 30,000 customers.
Tolou held the commercial side of the business as Chief Commercial Officer and was responsible for sales. In September 2024 Sendcloud brought in Amelia Scott as Chief Revenue Officer. Tolou, described in the announcement as having been “closely involved in leading our sales efforts”, said her global sales operations experience would help Sendcloud keep scaling, and the company said he would now focus on expanding key logistics partnerships.
He also speaks for the company in public. In late 2024 he fronted Sendcloud’s consumer research showing growing demand for delivery to parcel lockers and pickup points, arguing that out-of-home delivery lowers costs for retailers while meeting shoppers’ wish for flexibility. In a SaaSiest talk published in November 2024 he described how a company has to adapt its people, culture and planning at each stage from start-up to enterprise, observing that “in the beginning, it’s less about experience and more about the drive to get things started.”
