Executive Summary
Aman Narang is Co-Founder, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Toast, the cloud-based point-of-sale and restaurant management platform. Toast exists because restaurants had been left behind by modern software: legacy terminals were closed, expensive and disconnected from the payments, payroll, ordering and customer-data systems restaurants increasingly depended on. Narang and his co-founders built an Android-based, all-in-one alternative and grew it into a publicly traded company serving restaurants across the United States and beyond. What is distinctive about Narang’s path is its length inside a single company: he spent eleven years as Co-President and, latterly, Chief Operating Officer, running the commercial side of the business — sales, marketing, customer success, business development and fintech — before stepping into the chief executive role in January 2024 as part of a planned succession.
Career Highlights
- Co-founded Toast with Steve Fredette and Jonathan Grimm, and has been its Chief Executive Officer since January 2024.
- Served as Toast’s Co-President from December 2012 to December 2023, and concurrently as Chief Operating Officer from June 2021 to December 2023.
- Has served continuously on Toast’s Board of Directors since January 2021, following earlier board service from December 2011 to December 2015 and from June 2017 to June 2018.
- Succeeded Chris Comparato as CEO in a leadership transition Toast announced in September 2023 and completed in January 2024.
- Helped take Toast public in 2021 and has led the company as a listed restaurant technology platform since.
- Worked in product management at Oracle before Toast; secondary coverage identifies the business as Endeca, the Cambridge search-technology company Oracle acquired in 2011, where he led the mobile commerce effort.
- Named to The Boston Globe’s Tech Power Players list, including the 2023 edition.
Professional Journey
Narang trained as a computer scientist at MIT, taking both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in the subject, and began his career in product management. Press accounts of Toast’s origins place him at Endeca, the Cambridge enterprise search company, where he worked alongside Steve Fredette and Jonathan Grimm and helped build the firm’s mobile commerce business. Toast’s own proxy statement records the employer as Oracle, which acquired Endeca in 2011 — the same period the three were beginning to work on what became Toast.
The founding story the three have told publicly is mundane in a way that explains the product: they were eating out together in Boston, waiting too long for a check, and wanted to pay from a phone. The first product was consumer-facing, and it did not work. What did work was turning the problem around and selling to the restaurant instead — replacing the point-of-sale terminal itself, then layering ordering, payments, payroll and lending on top of it. Narang took the Co-President title in December 2012 and held it for eleven years, owning the go-to-market side of that expansion.
His board history at Toast is unusual and worth reading carefully: he sat on the board from December 2011 to December 2015, again from June 2017 to June 2018, and then continuously from January 2021. In June 2021 he added the Chief Operating Officer title to Co-President, consolidating sales, marketing, customer success, business development and fintech under one operating leader as the company prepared to go public. Toast listed on the New York Stock Exchange later that year.
In September 2023 Toast announced that Narang would succeed Chris Comparato as Chief Executive Officer, a transition that took effect in January 2024. He is the first of the co-founders to hold the role, and took it after more than a decade of running the company’s commercial engine rather than arriving from outside.
