Executive Summary

Alexander Siniouguine is the founder and chief executive of Virto Commerce, a headless, API-first digital commerce platform aimed primarily at complex B2B sellers — manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers whose catalogues, pricing rules and account hierarchies do not fit conventional retail storefront software. He is an engineer by background rather than a commercial one: before starting the company he had already built one commerce platform that a larger vendor bought and shipped under its own name, and Virto Commerce is in effect his second attempt at the same problem with the architectural decisions made differently. The company he founded in 2011 now employs more than 100 people across offices in the United States, Cyprus and Lithuania, and was placed as a Niche Player in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce.

Career Highlights

  • Founder and CEO of Virto Commerce since 2011, and still in post.
  • Creator and chief product architect of the e-commerce framework that EPiServer acquired in March 2012 and brought to market as Episerver Commerce.
  • Grew Virto Commerce to 100-plus employees across three international offices, with additional presence in Argentina, Germany and Spain.
  • Virto Commerce recognised as a Niche Player in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce.
  • More than twenty years in software product development and e-commerce operations, per the company’s own author bio.

Professional Journey

Siniouguine’s career begins on the build side of e-commerce rather than the selling side. Working at Mediachase, he was the creator and chief product architect of an e-commerce framework — the kind of product licensed by systems integrators and software vendors rather than bought by end merchants directly. That framework became the foundation of a commercial platform at a much larger vendor: on 1 March 2012 the Swedish web content management company EPiServer announced it had acquired the business of Mediachase, and that its EPiServer Commerce solution was built on Mediachase’s e-commerce framework and technology. EPiServer’s stated motivation was that its partners and customers wanted its commerce offering to move faster than it could build alone. For Siniouguine the practical result was that a platform he had architected went on to serve a considerably larger installed base under someone else’s brand.

He had, however, already moved on. Virto Commerce was incorporated in 2011, ahead of the EPiServer transaction closing, and had released version 1.0 of its own platform. The sequencing matters for reading his career correctly: this was not a founder leaving after an acquisition and starting something new with the proceeds, but a separate company standing up its own product while his earlier work was being absorbed elsewhere. The company was headquartered in Los Angeles, and he has remained based there.

The strategic bet Virto Commerce has made under his leadership is architectural. Where most commerce platforms of the early 2010s were monolithic — storefront, catalogue, checkout and administration shipped as one deployable unit — Virto Commerce was built as a modular, API-first system whose front end is decoupled from its commerce services. That approach acquired the labels “headless” and later “composable” as the market caught up with it, and it is the basis of the company’s pitch to B2B organisations that need to expose commerce capability through portals, ERP integrations, punch-out catalogues and sales-rep tooling rather than through a single website. The company positions itself against both the enterprise suites and the retail-first SaaS platforms on exactly this axis.

Siniouguine has led the company for its entire life so far, without the CEO turnover common at venture-scaled software companies, and it has grown into a distributed organisation of over a hundred people with engineering and operations spread across the United States, Cyprus and Lithuania and further presence in Argentina, Germany and Spain. He co-founded it alongside Evgeny Grigul, who serves as chief operating officer. Recognition of the company’s position arrived in November 2025, when Gartner named Virto Commerce a Niche Player in its 2025 Magic Quadrant for Digital Commerce — a placement that reflects a focused rather than broad market presence, which is consistent with the deliberately B2B-specific strategy. He also writes regularly under his own byline on the company blog, where his posts concentrate on composable architecture and B2B commerce strategy rather than on company news.
