Chidambaram was born in Chennai in 1979 and studied at Government College of Technology in Coimbatore from 1997 to 2001, graduating into the immediate aftermath of the dot-com collapse – a labour market that, by his own account, pushed him toward further study rather than straight into industry. He went to the United States for a Master’s in Computer Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago from 2002 to 2004, funded by a full scholarship and multiple teaching and research assistantships.

He founded DCKAP in 2005, the year after finishing his Master’s, working out of a small Chicago apartment. There was no outside capital; the entire origin story is two desks, two computers and two people. In 2006 he moved operations toward Silicon Valley, a decision he attributes to reading Jack Welch’s autobiography and concluding that he needed to be where the opportunity density was highest.

The pivotal period came around 2013, when the company hit a financial crisis severe enough to put him into significant business and personal debt. He has written that it took about five years to work out from under it. The recovery period reshaped how he ran the company and how he thinks about money – he credits Eric Schmidt’s book on how Google works with refocusing him on company culture, and Andrew Tobias’s personal-investing guide with rebuilding his financial literacy to the point of doing basic things like buying term insurance. In 2015, during this same stretch, he founded a second company, Productimize.

DCKAP settled into its current identity as an integration platform for distributors – connecting ERP systems such as Epicor Prophet 21 to e-commerce, PIM and other business systems – and became a distributed, remote-first organization. When the company closed its Chennai office in 2021 as part of that shift, Chidambaram turned the moment into DCKAP Palli, named for the Tamil word for school.
