Executive Summary

Jeff Kaiden is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Capacity LLC, a privately held third-party logistics company headquartered in North Brunswick, New Jersey, that handles ecommerce and B2B order fulfillment for consumer brands. He has run the company since it started in 1999. He came to fulfillment from warehouse engineering, not retail. He studied civil engineering and operations research at Princeton and worked as a consultant designing the insides of distribution centres, including their conveyor, rack and sortation systems. Capacity was founded in the dot-com era and has grown to close to a million square feet around its New Jersey headquarters, with further campuses in California and Indianapolis.

Career Highlights

  • Co-founded Capacity in 1999 with Thom Campbell and Arlen Fish and has managed it as chief executive since its inception.
  • Built the business from space inside NetGrocer’s New Jersey facility to close to a million square feet of fulfillment space in northern New Jersey.
  • Expanded to Los Angeles in the early 2010s and to Indianapolis in the mid-2010s, with UK and European fulfillment through partners and a technology team in Pune, India.
  • As Birchbox’s fulfillment partner, helped it grow from 5,000 to 125,000 boxes a month.
  • Earlier worked as a senior consultant at Sigman/Kaiden Consultants on warehouse design and material handling, and as a project manager on Southeast Asian infrastructure projects for Hopewell Holdings and the Keppel Group.

Professional Journey

Kaiden studied civil engineering and operations research at Princeton University. His early career was in engineering projects, including project management on infrastructure work in Southeast Asia with Hopewell Holdings and the Keppel Group. He then joined Sigman/Kaiden Consultants, working with his father, Allen Kaiden, on warehouse designs and material handling systems for large companies. In his own words, the job was designing “the insides of warehouses, you know the conveyor and the rack and sortation and stuff like that.”

In the late 1990s he and Arlen Fish were studying at NYU’s business school while holding day jobs. With Thom Campbell, the three started Capacity in 1999 as a third-party logistics provider for the new wave of internet retailers that needed someone to pick, pack and ship their orders. Capacity’s own history credits Allen Kaiden’s distribution centre expertise as instrumental in the early years. The company first operated inside NetGrocer’s facility, later took over that lease, and grew to close to a million square feet across northern New Jersey.

Under Kaiden, Capacity has specialised in brands with complicated orders rather than high-volume commodity goods. It lists beauty, apparel, health and wellness, consumer electronics and small home goods among its sectors, and it states plainly that it is not the right partner for storage-only clients or oversized freight. Subscription boxes were an early strength: Capacity helped Birchbox grow from 5,000 to 125,000 boxes a month. Geographic expansion followed its customers. In the early 2010s it opened in Los Angeles for access to the ports, and in the mid-2010s it added Indianapolis for the Midwest. It now serves the UK and Europe through partners and runs a technology hub in Pune, India, alongside dozens of in-house engineers who support its own systems.

Kaiden has credited the rise of Amazon and ecommerce with changing how people see his industry, saying that “suddenly everyone became aware of our industry.” The company honours his late father through the Allen Kaiden Scholarship Award, which recognises the children of Capacity employees.
