Executive Summary
Doug Vail is Chief Revenue Officer of Industrial Inspection & Analysis (IIA), a privately held, private equity-backed company based in the Atlanta area that provides industrial inspection, testing, laboratory analysis, calibration and certification. IIA was founded in 2015 and has grown largely by buying established regional testing businesses in the United States and Canada. Vail leads revenue for that combined group. He is a mechanical engineer by training who moved into sales several years into his career, and he spent most of it selling industrial services. Before IIA he was Executive Vice President of Sales at The Erosion Company.
Career Highlights
- Chief Revenue Officer of Industrial Inspection & Analysis, part of its executive team alongside CEO Christopher Niebuhr and President & COO Jason Schrage.
- Held the CRO title by July 2021, when he described IIA as having acquired about 17 testing, inspection, certification and calibration companies across the US and Canada.
- Executive Vice President of Sales at The Erosion Company before joining IIA.
- Industrial sales experience at GrayWolf Industrial, Superheat, Thompson Industrial Services and AquilexSRO.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama.
Professional Journey
Vail trained as a mechanical engineer at the University of Alabama. By his own account in a 2021 podcast interview, his first sales job came about seven years after he graduated. From there, he said, he “continued to get bigger roles” inside a growing organisation.
His sales career was spent in industrial services. IIA’s biography lists industrial sales experience at GrayWolf Industrial, Superheat, Thompson Industrial Services and AquilexSRO, and a role as Executive Vice President of Sales at The Erosion Company immediately before he joined IIA.
At IIA he is Chief Revenue Officer. The company was assembled from acquisitions of established testing and inspection firms, some of them decades old, and offers field and laboratory services including non-destructive testing, fluid analysis, calibration and metrology, and lifting-equipment inspection. In July 2021 Vail described it as “a privately-held testing and inspection company” that had acquired about 17 companies in roughly five years. In the same interview he spoke about the pace of private equity ownership (“how quickly can you get me to the next level?”) and argued that a complex sales organisation cannot be run without a CRM system. IIA is a portfolio company of SRM Equity Partners, and its leadership page continues to list him as Chief Revenue Officer.
