Executive Summary

Chip Kahn — formally Alfred “Chip” Kahn IV — is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of OvationCXM, a customer experience management company he founded in 2014 as Boomtown and rebranded in September 2022. The problem OvationCXM addresses is a structural one in financial services: when a bank sells a merchant a payment terminal, the customer’s experience is actually delivered by a chain of parties — the bank, the processor, an ISO, a hardware vendor, an installer — none of whom sees the whole journey, and all of whom the customer blames when it breaks. The company’s CXMEngine platform stitches that chain together, giving each participant a 360-degree view of the interaction and the ability to intervene in real time. Its customers are the payments and banking companies that live with the problem: Square, Nuvei, KeyBank, Alviere, Maverick Payments and others. Kahn is on his fourth company, and the previous three were all in the same neighbourhood of infrastructure that consumers never see — BroadHop, acquired by Cisco, and IP Commerce, which he grew to an $8 billion payment volume run rate while helping Square and Intuit launch their payment products.

Professional Journey

Kahn graduated from Colorado State University and went into telecommunications and payments infrastructure — the layer of technology that determines whether a transaction works, and which is invisible until it does not. His first significant company was BroadHop, founded in the early 2000s, which built policy control and subscriber management systems for network operators. It was acquired by Cisco, giving him an exit in a domain defined by carrier-grade reliability and multi-party integration.

IP Commerce came next, and it is the company that most directly shaped what he does now. Kahn co-founded it and served as CEO and executive chairman, building a platform that abstracted the fragmented American payments landscape — acquirers, processors, gateways — into something a software company could build on without negotiating with each participant individually. Under his leadership it went from an idea to an $8 billion payment volume run rate, and it was the infrastructure that helped companies including Square and Intuit bring their own payment products to market. Between ventures he spent time as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Commerce Ventures, the fintech-focused fund, from around 2013.

The insight behind his fourth company came from watching what happened after the transaction infrastructure worked. Payments had been abstracted successfully, but the customer experience around it had not. A merchant signing up for card acceptance still dealt with a bank, a processor, an ISO, a terminal vendor and an installer, each holding one fragment of the relationship and none accountable for the whole. Organisations were, as Kahn describes it, consistently failing to meet customer expectations not through lack of effort but through lack of visibility.

He founded Boomtown in 2014 to solve it, initially focused on field service and support for merchant technology. The product evolved into something broader, and in June 2021 the company launched CXMEngine, a platform for end-to-end experience management across multiple parties. Growth in demand for CXMEngine was substantial enough that the company took the platform’s name as its identity: in September 2022 Boomtown rebranded as OvationCXM, raising $20 million at the same time. That followed a $12 million round in May 2019 from Telstra Ventures and Capital One Growth Ventures — investors whose interest in carrier and banking distribution respectively matched where the product sells.

Since the rebrand the company has moved along two tracks. The first is capability: generative AI was introduced across the platform in September 2023, and a re-engineered CXMEngine focused on customer journey orchestration shipped in January 2026. The second is distribution through partnership rather than direct sales alone — a KeyBank and XUP collaboration in May 2021, a RingCentral integration, a PayPal partnership on merchant experience in April 2024, an IBM partnership in June 2024 putting banking solutions on LinuxONE and IBM Z, and an expanded MerchantE relationship in August 2024. The enterprise trust requirements that come with banking customers have been met in parallel, with the company completing a SOC 2 Type 2 examination in July 2026.

Recognition has come mostly from within the payments industry rather than the general business press: PYMNTS gave Kahn its Mike P. Duffy Leadership Award in March 2016, and OvationCXM has appeared on FinTech Global’s AIFintech100 list in both 2023 and 2025 and was named Best CXM Platform by Wealth & Finance International in September 2025. Earlier in his career he was named to a 40 Under 40 list in 2002 and was a semi-finalist for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year.
