Professional Journey

Catania studied Applied Economics and Political Science at Cornell University, where he was a Cornell Tradition Fellow and where he founded his first company, RaceFan, a motorsports information and e-commerce business that grew into one of the leading online motorsports sites in the United States.

His most technically consequential earlier venture was M-Dot Network, a digital coupon company he founded and led. M-Dot built what was described as the first retail point-of-sale to cloud transaction engine, enabling digital coupons to be redeemed in real time at grocery checkouts across North America. That is a harder problem than it sounds: a checkout terminal cannot wait, so the system must reach the cloud, validate an offer, and return an answer inside the moment between an item being scanned and the total being displayed, across thousands of stores on heterogeneous retail infrastructure. He subsequently served as Chief Executive Officer of CoinFlip Solutions, a cloud payment platform handling health benefits, points and promotional offers.

OneRail, founded in January 2018, applies the same class of thinking to delivery. Retailers promising same-day or scheduled delivery must decide, for every order, which of many possible carriers should carry it — national couriers, regional fleets, gig drivers, their own vehicles — balancing cost against the promised window, and then handle the substantial share of deliveries where something does not go to plan. Most retailers had neither the carrier relationships nor the decision logic to do this well, and were either overpaying or failing on promises.

OneRail orchestrates that layer, connecting enterprise retailers and wholesalers to an integrated coast-to-coast courier network with real-time visibility and exception management. Catania has raised a $33 million Series B and a $42 million Series C for the business, sits on the Forbes Technology Council, and speaks regularly at FreightWaves events.
