Executive Summary

Wendy Wolf is the president and founder of ImpactBio, a firm that supplies the commercial capability that small life sciences companies need but cannot yet afford to build. Its services are recruiting, contract sales organisation partnerships, and training and operational support, sold to start-ups and small to mid-sized pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies — the constituency that has a product moving toward market and no sales organisation to launch it with. The specialism is directly drawn from her own career: more than thirty years in pharmaceutical sales, marketing, operations and business development, beginning at American Cyanamid’s Lederle Laboratories Division and running through Wyeth and Pfizer in roles of increasing responsibility, and including roughly nine years across four different contract sales organisations. She has seen the outsourced commercial model from the vendor side, the client side and now the advisory side.

Career Highlights

  • Founded ImpactBio and leads it as president, serving life science start-ups and small to mid-sized pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies.
  • Built a pharmaceutical career of more than thirty years across American Cyanamid’s Lederle Laboratories Division, Wyeth and Pfizer.
  • Accumulated roughly nine years of experience across four separate contract sales organisations.
  • Served as National Sales Director and then Business Development Director at Publicis Touchpoint Solutions between 2012 and 2014.
  • Founded and ran Three Sisters’ Marketplace, an artisan marketplace, from 2009 to 2015.
  • Assembled an ImpactBio leadership team whose members individually bring twenty to twenty-five years each in pharmaceutical recruiting, field sales leadership and commercial training.

Professional Journey

Wolf’s pharmaceutical career began at American Cyanamid’s Lederle Laboratories Division and continued through Wyeth and then Pfizer, following the consolidation of those businesses, in sales and marketing roles of increasing responsibility. That arc gave her the large-company view of how commercial organisations are structured, resourced and measured — and, by extension, of how much of that apparatus a small company genuinely needs.

Alongside and after the big-pharma years she worked extensively in the contract sales organisation sector, accumulating around nine years across four different CSOs. The CSO model exists precisely because commercial infrastructure is expensive and lumpy: a company launching a single product does not want to hire, train and then lay off a national field force. Her time at Publicis Touchpoint Solutions falls in this period — National Sales Director from September 2012 to August 2013, then Business Development Director until July 2014 — giving her both the delivery and the sales side of outsourced commercial services.

In between, she ran a business with no connection to the industry at all: Three Sisters’ Marketplace, an artisan marketplace she founded and led as chief executive from 2009 to 2015. It is the entrepreneurial experience that precedes ImpactBio, and it overlaps the Publicis years.

She then founded ImpactBio to apply the CSO logic to the customers least well served by it — start-ups and small to mid-sized life science companies, which need commercial teams assembled quickly and flexibly rather than bought as a standard package. The firm offers direct recruiting, CSO partnerships and training and operational support under the banner of outsourced agility, and Wolf has built a leadership group around her with deep individual tenure: Lori Danek on talent engagements, Rusty Jackson on commercial operations, Deb Schrei on client engagements and Laurie Cusic on talent training and development. She describes the firm’s operating values as a commitment to excellence, integrity and team spirit.
