Professional Journey

Ciml is from Prague and studied information technology at Czech Technical University. While there he was involved in the University Entrepreneur Club, which had been set up by Jan Šedivý, a former Google engineer — the kind of institution that tends to convert engineering students into founders, and did so here.

His first venture, in 2011, was easyWall: a system for using augmented reality to visualise furniture in a real room in real time. The idea was sound and is now commonplace in retail apps, but in 2011 the hardware and the market were not there. It is remembered in accounts of his career as having been ahead of its time.

SlidesLive followed in 2012. Ciml both developed and co-founded it, raising $1 million to build a company around professional conference recording. The technical core is the synchronisation of video with slides — treating a presentation as two streams that have to stay aligned, rather than as a single camera feed pointed at a stage. That makes a recorded talk navigable and embeddable, which is what turns a conference archive from a storage cost into something people actually use.
