Executive Summary

Aaron Calvo is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Forage AI, a data extraction and document intelligence company that turns unstructured material — websites, scanned filings, handwritten notes, tables buried in PDFs — into structured datasets for clients in financial services and healthcare. The company is bootstrapped, having taken no outside funding, and positions itself as a fully managed service rather than a self-serve tool. Calvo reached the work through an unusual route: he spent the first half of his career in quantitative finance at Bridgewater Associates, Group One Trading, and King Street Capital Management, then moved into data automation leadership at ZocDoc, IHS Markit, and Rho AI before founding his own company.

Career Highlights

  • Founder and CEO of Forage AI, built without external investment to a team the company reports at more than 100 engineers.
  • Operates data pipelines the company reports as monitoring 60 million-plus URLs and 10 million-plus documents annually at 99.7% extraction accuracy.
  • Serves clients concentrated in financial services and healthcare, including Definitive Healthcare, Vested, Expert Institute, 22C Capital, OurFamilyWizard, and Just Appraised.
  • Former Head of Web Crawling and Data Automation at Rho AI and Director of Data Automation at IHS Markit.
  • Began his career in quantitative finance, including a trading associate role at Bridgewater Associates and algorithmic trading analysis at Group One Trading.

Professional Journey

Calvo studied economics at Rutgers University, graduating in 2007, with additional study in accounting and finance at the London School of Economics. He went directly into quantitative finance, joining Bridgewater Associates as a trading associate in 2007, then spending two years at Group One Trading as an analyst working on high-frequency trading algorithms, followed by two years as an analyst at King Street Capital Management. That stretch gave him a decade’s grounding in the discipline that underpins his current business: extracting signal from messy, high-volume data under time pressure.

In 2012 he moved out of finance and into operational data work, joining ZocDoc as Manager of Data Automation. After three years there he stepped away from industry entirely, spending 2015 and 2016 on sabbatical as a volunteer with the Isha Foundation. He returned to data automation in 2017, consulting for H1 and taking a directorship at IHS Markit, where he led data automation through 2019, then serving as Head of Web Crawling and Data Automation at Rho AI.

Forage AI grew out of that accumulated specialization. The consistent thread across ZocDoc, IHS Markit, and Rho AI was the same unglamorous problem: the data a business needs is usually published somewhere, but in a form no system can read — spread across thousands of inconsistent websites, or locked inside documents that defeat naive parsing. Forage AI addresses this as a managed service, combining web crawling at scale with OCR and document intelligence capable of handling tables and handwritten content, and more recently adding AI agents intended to adapt when a source site changes rather than breaking. The company concentrates on financial and healthcare data, domains where the underlying documents are both highly structured in principle and highly irregular in practice, and where the cost of an extraction error is high enough to justify a managed rather than self-serve approach.
