Professional Journey
RLS Logistics began as R. Leo & Son Mushroom Farm, founded in Newfield, New Jersey, in 1968 by Rosario Leo, who had emigrated from Italy a decade earlier. Over two decades the family moved from growing into storing and shipping perishables, building its first cold storage warehouse in 1988 and reorganising as a temperature-controlled logistics provider. Marking the company’s 50th anniversary in 2018, Russell Leo summed up the family’s inheritance: “Our grandfather taught our father that with hard work, determination and initiative you can achieve the American Dream.”
By then the third generation was in charge, with the business divided between a Transportation Group led by Russell and a Warehousing Group led by Tony Leo. On the transportation side RLS runs temperature-controlled less-than-truckload and full-truckload services and a freight brokerage, and in 2019 it moved the brokerage office in Mount Laurel into premises that doubled its space and staff. Leo attributed the growth to the team and framed the goal as making it easier for shippers to do business with the company.
By the company’s 55th anniversary in October 2023 he was named simply as CEO. RLS then described itself as operating in six states, with more than ten facilities and offices, over 400 team members and a headquarters in Glassboro. “Without their perseverance and pride in what we do,” Leo said of his staff, “we couldn’t provide a great experience for our customers and be a valued partner in the temperature-controlled space.” The company remains family-owned; in November 2025 it was certified as a Great Place to Work for the second year running. Outside RLS he serves as a Director at Large of GCCA Warehouse, according to the Global Cold Chain Alliance.
