Cherian began his career in India as a senior software engineer at Honeywell Technology Solutions, then moved into international R&D work with a posting at Agilent Technologies in Scotland. From approximately 2004 to 2007 he was an R&D engineer at Hewlett-Packard, and from roughly 2007 he worked at Telefónica’s research and development organization in Spain, where he remained until around 2013. The through-line across those roles is low-level and systems work — firmware, architecture, and the engineering of large distributed platforms — rather than application development.

CogniCor was founded in 2012 in Barcelona, emerging from an artificial intelligence research institute and from Dr Sindhu Joseph’s doctoral research on the application of cognitive science to automated user query resolution. Joseph took the CEO role and Cherian the CTO role, a division that maps cleanly onto their respective backgrounds: her research provided the cognitive and machine-learning foundation, his engineering experience provided the means to turn it into deployable software. The company holds pending patents in user learning and issue resolution built on its own machine learning and cognitive algorithms.

The company subsequently narrowed its market focus onto wealth management — financial advisors, broker-dealers and the operational back office that supports them — and relocated its commercial focus to the San Francisco Bay Area, where the customer base sits. Cherian has led the technology organization throughout, through the company’s transition from a Barcelona research spinout to a US-market enterprise software vendor.
