Professional Journey
Daswani studied economics at Columbia University and began his career at J.P. Morgan Chase in 1995. Two years later he moved to its private equity arm, J.P. Morgan Partners, and stayed there until 2004. He then became a Principal at FTV Capital from 2004 to 2008 and at JMI Equity from 2008 to 2012. Both are growth-equity firms, and across them he built sector expertise in financial services, healthcare and IT. He also earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In 2013 he moved from investing to operating. He joined PayPal, where he held leadership roles in corporate development and finance until 2017. That period covered PayPal’s separation from eBay, and Oportun describes his role then as CFO of Payments, Platform and Risk. He next became Head of Strategy and Finance at Square (now Block) from 2017 to 2019, a period of rapid revenue growth for the company.
In January 2020 he became Chief Financial Officer of ThoughtSpot, the AI-powered analytics company. Besides finance and accounting, his remit covered people, legal, corporate development, IT and real estate. He left in July 2024 and joined SimplePractice as CFO in August 2024. SimplePractice’s own description of the role emphasises strategic and financial planning in support of independent mental health practices.
His public-company board work started in February 2024, when Oportun, a Nasdaq-listed lender, expanded its board and appointed him a director. He now chairs its Compensation and Leadership Committee and sits on the Audit and Risk Committee as a designated financial expert. At the August 2026 annual meeting he was the only Class I nominee, and shareholders elected him to a one-year term. Since 2018 he has also been on the advisory board of Centana Growth Partners.
