Executive Summary

Matt Levin is Chief Executive Officer of Modern Health, a San Francisco company whose platform employers use to give staff mental health care, from self-guided tools and coaching to therapy and crisis support. He took over in April 2025 from founder Alyson Watson, who became executive chair. His background is employee benefits rather than clinical care. He ran the publicly traded benefits software company Benefitfocus through its sale to Voya Financial, and before that he held senior strategy roles at ADP, Aon and Hewitt Associates. Employers buy Modern Health as a benefit, so that is the part of the market he knows best.

Professional Journey

Levin started in the First Scholar Program at First Chicago NBD, now part of JPMorgan Chase, and then worked as a management consultant at Sibson & Company. He moved into corporate strategy and operations roles, including vice president and global operations officer for the human capital solutions business at Hudson Highland Group and senior vice president of corporate development and strategic planning at IHS Inc.

At Hewitt Associates, the benefits and HR outsourcing firm, he was senior vice president of corporate development and strategy. He was a core member of the team that led the $4.9 billion combination of Aon Consulting and Hewitt, which created one of the largest benefits and human resources firms. He stayed with the combined business and was executive vice president and head of global strategy at Aon from August 2011 to December 2016. From January 2017 to October 2018 he was a managing partner at Psilos Group Managers, a growth equity firm, where he focused on technology-enabled healthcare services investments. In November 2018 he joined ADP as chief strategy officer, overseeing strategy, corporate development, ADP Ventures and the ADP Research Institute.

In May 2021 Benefitfocus, a Charleston, South Carolina benefits administration platform listed on Nasdaq, appointed him president and chief executive officer and a director, succeeding Stephen Swad. Voya Financial agreed to acquire the company in November 2022. The deal completed in January 2023, and Benefitfocus deregistered its shares that February. He then became chief executive of People 2.0, a global HR services platform.

Modern Health named him CEO in April 2025. Alyson Watson, who founded the company, moved to executive chair of the board. Modern Health sells to employers and says its provider network covers more than 200 countries and territories and more than 80 languages. In the months after his appointment the company added a chief commercial officer and a chief people and strategy officer, and in May 2025 it launched a new employee assistance programme offering, FlexEAP.
