Professional Journey
Koenig Equipment began in 1904, when John C. Koenig acquired the assets of Botkins Hardware Store in Botkins, Ohio. The business sold a bit of everything and traded horses for implements, then moved through several major equipment lines: International Harvester, John Deere, a period running both Deere and Case IH stores, and finally back to John Deere alone. Throughout, it stayed in the family.
Aaron Koenig, John C. Koenig’s great-grandson, leads it as President and CEO, a role he held by 2020 when the group had 15 stores. His uncle Ray Koenig, under whose leadership the business became the multi-location Koenig Equipment Inc., served as chairman. In a 2021 interview with Farm Equipment, Koenig said the dealership’s success comes from “great customers, great products, great employees, great processes” but above all from operating “the business like a business. It’s professionally managed.” He described rewarding salespeople for process and effort rather than unit outcomes alone, and a leadership pipeline deep enough that when managers leave “we’ve got people waiting to backfill”, built around six defined core values used in hiring.
In July 2024 the company marked 120 years of family ownership. Koenig said that while the company celebrated its past, “we’re focused on the future”, committing to its growth trajectory while preparing the fifth generation of the family for future roles. In 2025 Ray Koenig was posthumously inducted into the Farm Equipment Dealer Hall of Fame, and Aaron accepted the award on his behalf at the Dealership Minds Summit.
