Executive Summary

Markus Naef is CEO of bexio, the Swiss company that makes cloud-based business software, covering accounting, invoicing and administration, for small businesses and the self-employed. He took over on 1 May 2022, four years after the insurer Mobiliar acquired bexio and kept it as an independent subsidiary. He came from SwissSign Group AG, which he led as CEO until its takeover by Swiss Post in October 2021, and before that sat on the executive board of Sunrise Communications with responsibility for business customers. His career runs through business-customer technology: telecoms for companies, then digital identity, then software for the smallest firms.

Professional Journey

Between 2014 and 2017 Naef was a member of the executive board of Sunrise Communications AG, the Swiss telecoms operator, where he was responsible for the business-customer division.

He then became CEO of SwissSign Group AG, the Swiss provider of digital certificates and of SwissID, a login and digital-identity service. La Mobiliere Group, announcing his next move, credited him with having made SwissSign and SwissID into an established brand for developing and marketing secure digital identities over the preceding five years. SwissSign was taken over by Swiss Post in October 2021.

In February 2022 bexio announced that he would become its CEO on 1 May 2022, succeeding Laurent Decrue. At the same time Tom Sprenger, previously CTO at SwissSign, joined as CTO, while Decrue and the departing CTO Nenad Nikolic left to concentrate on a software company they had founded together. bexio started in 2013 as easySYS, founded by three friends to build office software for small businesses. It took the bexio name in 2015 and was acquired by Mobiliar in July 2018, since when it has operated as an independent subsidiary within the La Mobiliere Group.

His conference biography describes his task as moving bexio from startup to scale-up, and says that under his leadership the company grew from 80 to more than 240 employees and from 42,000 to more than 90,000 customers in three years. He speaks on that transition, from startup improvisation to growth built on clear structures, process automation and data-driven decisions. The same biography says he has more than 25 years of business experience and sits on the boards of ewl AG and Keyros AG.
