Professional Journey

Roessner studied accounting at Siena College and law at St. John’s University School of Law, graduating cum laude from both. He then practised as a mergers and acquisitions lawyer and became a partner in the M&A Group at Clifford Chance US LLP.

He joined ETRADE Financial in May 2009 as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. In September 2016, as ETRADE closed its acquisition of OptionsHouse, the board reshuffled its leadership. It made Roessner Chief Executive Officer and a director in place of Paul Idzik, and named Rodger Lawson Executive Chairman. Lawson called Roessner “a proven and embedded leader with deep company expertise” and said core brokerage growth had “come under pressure”. Roessner was also President and a director of E*TRADE Bank. In August 2019 he told the company he would leave after ten years. Chief Operating Officer Mike Pizzi succeeded him as CEO, and Roessner stayed as a senior advisor until December 2019.

In 2020 he became Chief Executive Officer and a director of Lefteris Acquisition Corp., a special purpose acquisition company targeting financial technology. He signed its registration statement as CEO in October 2020. He stepped down as CEO on 7 September 2022 and became Vice Chairman the next day. A month later Lefteris said it would dissolve and redeem its public shares because it could not complete a business combination in the required time.

Vestmark announced him as Chief Executive Officer on 8 September 2022. Mike Blundin, the previous CEO, moved into a newly created President and COO role. Vestmark was founded in 2001 and its platform supports more than $2 trillion in assets, over five million accounts and more than 72,000 advisors. Its biography of Roessner says he has taken the company from a single-solution provider to a multi-solution business serving wealth managers, asset managers, broker-dealers and registered investment advisors. Under his leadership its advisory subsidiary, Vestmark Advisory Solutions, grew fivefold in 18 months to pass $50 billion in assets under management in 2026. The company also named a Chief AI Officer and launched Pulse, a portfolio-monitoring AI tool.

On 9 September 2026 Envestnet announced a definitive agreement to acquire Vestmark, subject to customary conditions, with terms not disclosed. Roessner said in the announcement that “together we can create something neither company could deliver on its own.”
