Executive Summary

Jonathan Seltzer is Chief Executive Officer of SimplePractice, the electronic health record and practice management platform used by therapists, counsellors and other independent clinicians to run their practices. A finance and corporate development executive by background, he joined in 2019, ran operations and then the small-business division of its former public parent, EngageSmart, and was named CEO in 2024, the year Vista Equity Partners took EngageSmart private. The company says it now serves more than 250,000 independent practitioners, and his public position is an argument for clinician independence: that solo and small practices, supported by better infrastructure, are central to expanding access to mental health care.

Career Highlights

  • Chief Executive Officer of SimplePractice since 2024, after serving as Chief Operating Officer and President.
  • President of SMB Solutions at EngageSmart, Inc. from June 2021; Chief Operating Officer January–June 2021; Executive Vice President of Business and Corporate Development from September 2019.
  • Held the SMB leadership role through EngageSmart’s NYSE listing in 2021 and its $23-a-share take-private by Vista Equity Partners, completed in January 2024.
  • Led the acquisition of the psychiatry practice platform Luminello, per his 2024 Behavioral Health Tech biography.
  • Formerly Chief Financial Officer and Head of Corporate Development at CLEAResult Consulting, where he worked from 2014 to 2019.

Professional Journey

Seltzer graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a B.A. in Political Science and spent the first part of his career in finance. His conference biography describes more than fifteen years in private equity and investment banking at KRG Capital Partners, Wachovia Securities and Piper Jaffray; SimplePractice’s own biography highlights the private equity work at KRG.

In March 2014 he joined CLEAResult Consulting, an energy-efficiency services company, where he held several roles before becoming Chief Financial Officer and Head of Corporate Development, leaving in January 2019.

He joined EngageSmart, the parent of SimplePractice, in September 2019 as Executive Vice President of Business and Corporate Development. He became Chief Operating Officer in January 2021 and, in June 2021, President of SMB Solutions — the segment built around SimplePractice — a few months before EngageSmart listed on the New York Stock Exchange that September. In that period SimplePractice extended beyond therapy into psychiatry, including the acquisition of Luminello, a platform for psychiatric practices, which his conference biography credits to him.

In October 2023 EngageSmart agreed to be acquired by funds advised by Vista Equity Partners, with General Atlantic rolling over part of its stake; the deal closed on 26 January 2024 at $23.00 a share and the company left the NYSE. Seltzer was named SimplePractice’s chief executive in 2024.

As CEO he has framed the company around independent practice. In March 2026 he introduced SimpleConnect, which SimplePractice describes as a neutral connection layer linking payers, health systems, employers and other healthcare partners directly with independent practitioners — part of an argument, in his words, that “true efficiency comes from infrastructure that supports, rather than constrains, independent practitioners.”
