Professional Journey
Dimon earned a bachelor’s degree at Tufts University and an MBA at Harvard Business School, and began his career at American Express. He then served as Chief Financial Officer and later President of Commercial Credit, which acquired Primerica in 1987 and The Travelers Corporation in 1993.
He was President and Chief Operating Officer of Travelers from 1990 to 1998, and Chief Operating Officer of its Smith Barney subsidiary, becoming co-chairman and co-CEO of the brokerage formed by the 1997 merger of Smith Barney and Salomon Brothers. In 1998 he was named President of Citigroup, formed by the combination of Travelers Group and Citicorp.
In 2000 he became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bank One. When Bank One merged with JPMorgan Chase on 1 July 2004 he became President and Chief Operating Officer, then Chief Executive Officer on 1 January 2006 and Chairman a year later. He serves on the boards of the Business Roundtable, the Bank Policy Institute and Harvard Business School.
