Executive Summary

Gregg Drumma is the founder of Gamma Three Trading, a Boston financial technology firm building software and consulting services for the electronic securities trading industry – order management systems, FIX Protocol integrations and trading infrastructure for investment managers, hedge funds, broker-dealers and exchanges. His most visible product came out of a problem he had rather than a market he identified: while building an order management system he needed to test FIX message flows without depending on live counterparties, built a simulator for internal use, and found it good enough to sell. FIXSIM has been in production as a commercial cloud product since 2012 and now processes over two million FIX messages a day across roughly a thousand FIX sessions tested daily. Alongside the business he has been an active participant in the standards community that underpins it, elected co-chair of the FIX Trading Community’s Global Cross Asset Committee in 2012.

Career Highlights

  • Founded Gamma Three Trading in 2010, self-funded, serving the electronic securities trading industry with software and consulting.
  • Created FIXSIM, a browser-based FIX protocol simulator requiring no installation, in production since 2012, with a rule builder for automated test scenarios and REST API integration into CI/CD pipelines.
  • FIXSIM now handles over two million FIX messages daily across approximately a thousand FIX sessions tested per day, serving broker-dealers, buy-side managers, OMS and EMS vendors, exchanges, fintech teams and independent contractors.
  • Elected co-chair of the FIX Trading Community’s Global Cross Asset Committee in 2012, supporting the protocol’s asset-class committees in best-practice and educational work.
  • Spent twelve years at Linedata Services as Vice President of Product Management for Electronic Trading, building the firm’s FIX Engine and a comprehensive order management system.
  • Began his career as an embedded software engineer at Motorola working on GSM mobile phone software.
  • Invited speaker at TradeTech, FIX Protocol Ltd and Institutional Investor events across North America, Asia, the United Kingdom and Europe.
  • Published or quoted in Securities Industry News, Wall Street & Technology and Advanced Trading, and author of two articles for the FIX Global quarterly.

Professional Journey

Drumma began in embedded systems rather than finance, working as a software engineer at Motorola from 1996 to 1998 on GSM mobile phone software – a discipline where protocol conformance and message-level correctness are the whole job, which turned out to be good preparation for what followed.

In 1998 he joined Linedata Services, the front-to-back office solutions provider, and stayed twelve years, rising to Vice President of Product Management for Electronic Trading. During that period he built the company’s FIX Engine and a comprehensive order management system. FIX – the Financial Information eXchange protocol – is the messaging standard through which most of the world’s institutional order flow travels, and building an engine for it meant living with the gap between the specification and the many ways counterparties actually implement it.

He left in 2010 to found Gamma Three Trading in Boston, offering consulting and software to investment firms, money managers and broker-dealers. The company has remained self-funded and small, and its credibility rests on deep protocol expertise rather than scale.

FIXSIM emerged from that work. Building an order management system requires constant testing against counterparty behaviour, and arranging that testing against live counterparties is slow, limited and occasionally impossible. Drumma built a simulator instead. It worked well enough internally that Gamma Three launched it as a cloud-hosted product, in production since 2012, running entirely in a browser with no installation. Its feature set has since grown well past simple simulation – users configure counterparties and order flows, trigger order actions manually through a portal, construct automated test scenarios with a rule builder, and wire the whole thing into continuous integration pipelines through a REST API. Its customer base now spans broker-dealers and trading firms, buy-side investment managers, OMS and EMS vendors, exchanges, fintech teams and individual software contractors, on six continents by the company’s account.

Drumma has stayed involved in the standards body itself rather than merely consuming its output. In 2012 he was elected co-chair of the FIX Trading Community’s Global Cross Asset Committee, working alongside Carl Weir of HSBC on a body formed to support the protocol’s existing asset-class-focused committees in their best-practice, educational and promotional work – an effort aimed at extending FIX cleanly beyond equities into other asset classes. He has also been a frequent conference speaker on both sides of the Atlantic and in Asia, and has written for the FIX Global quarterly.
