Executive Summary

Ed Wallen is Chief Executive Officer of C&R Software, the company behind Debt Manager, a collections and recovery platform used by banks and lenders to manage delinquent accounts. C&R Software was created in June 2021 when Jonas Software, an operating group of Constellation Software, bought FICO’s Collections and Recovery business; Wallen has led it since, as a standalone company whose entire focus is a product that had been one line in a much larger portfolio. His stated aim is to “humanize” collections: to treat delinquency as a point at which a lender helps a customer back to financial stability rather than a purely punitive process, and to use analytics and AI to decide the next best action for each case.

Career Highlights

  • Chief Executive Officer of C&R Software, leading it as an independent company since Jonas Software completed its acquisition of FICO’s Collections and Recovery business in June 2021.
  • Leads development of Debt Manager, a platform that traces its lineage to CR Software’s first collections system in 1984.
  • Has overseen the rebuild of Debt Manager as a cloud-native platform and the introduction of the FitLogic decision engine in 2024.
  • More than 20 years developing, marketing and selling collections and recovery software, according to his company biography.

Professional Journey

Wallen’s career has been built in collections and recovery software, the systems banks, card issuers and lenders use to manage accounts in arrears. His company biography says he has spent more than two decades developing, marketing and selling such software.

The business he now runs has a long history. CR Software launched its Platinum collections platform in 1984 and introduced Titanium, an open-architecture system for first- and third-party collections, in 2007; Titanium was rebranded as Debt Manager in 2012. CR Software was for years a subsidiary of FICO, the analytics company. In fiscal 2021, as FICO moved its software business toward its own platform, it decided to divest products not built on that platform. On 4 May 2021 it agreed to sell its Collections and Recovery business to Jonas Collections and Recovery, part of Constellation Software’s Jonas Software group, and the sale completed on 7 June 2021. C&R Software was born from that transaction, and the team that had built Debt Manager moved with it.

Wallen has been chief executive since the company’s formation. The European Financial Review described him in 2022 as committed to “creating humanity at scale” in collections, and in a company video that year he explained the idea: every customer’s situation is different, and the software’s job is to help lenders “figure out the next best thing to do” for a borrower in difficulty. He has pointed to fast deployment through pre-packaged templates, including for clients who came to C&R after failed implementations elsewhere, and has said some customers achieved full return on investment in under three months.

Under his leadership the company has rebuilt Debt Manager as a cloud-native platform on AWS with ISO 27001, SOC 2 and PCI-DSS certification, introduced the FitLogic decision engine in 2024, and added AI capabilities it markets as Zelas AI and an Agentic Framework. C&R Software now describes itself as an independent company with its own roadmap, distinct from FICO, with teams in the United States, the United Kingdom, South Africa and India.
