Executive Summary
Doug Johnson is Chief Executive Officer of Consensus, the B2B software company that pioneered demo automation: interactive, on-demand product demonstrations that let buyers explore software without waiting for a sales engineer. He was brought in as CEO in November 2023, succeeding founder Garin Hess, with a mandate to scale a company that then had more than 400 customers and nearly 200 employees. Since then he has used acquisitions to widen Consensus from recorded demos into live demos and AI agents, repositioning it as a “Product Experience Platform”.

Professional Journey
Johnson spent more than two decades in enterprise software before Consensus, in a career the company summarises as CRO, President and CEO roles at several technology companies. It is the profile of an operator who has run both a sales organisation and a whole business, which is what Consensus’s board said it wanted: Garin Hess described him as having “a deep understanding of the SaaS industry, technical selling, and the needs of modern buyers” and “a proven track record of success in growing and scaling companies of our size.”
Hess had founded Consensus in 2013 and coined the term “demo automation” the following year. By the time Johnson arrived the category had been recognised by Gartner and G2, the company had raised a $110 million Series C led by Sumeru Equity Partners, and it was growing revenue at more than 40 percent a year. The handover split the work cleanly: Hess kept product strategy from the board, and Johnson took on scaling the company. “Consensus is the most exciting project I’ve ever worked on,” Johnson said at the time.
His tenure has been defined by consolidation. In September 2024 Consensus acquired ReachSuite, adding live product demos to its recorded ones; Johnson said the deal would deliver on the vision of “transforming complex sales into easy, interactive buying experiences.” In 2026 the pace picked up with AI. In April the company agreed to acquire Peel, whose voice-driven agents turn static content into conversations, with Johnson arguing that “AI enables a transformational shift from showing a product through a static demo to letting the product sell itself.” In June it acquired Saleo, which injects a prospect’s own data into live demonstrations of the native product. Johnson framed the combined business around buyer friction: “Revenue teams don’t lose because they lack activity. They lose because buyers experience friction and don’t tell us.”
