Professional Journey

Berning began his career at Ernst & Young in its Life Sciences and Healthcare practice, where he earned his CPA. He later worked as an Associate Vice President at Capstone Advisors and as a Senior Vice President at LPL Financial, where Experity says he helped guide the brokerage firm through its initial public offering.

He then moved into healthcare as a finance chief, first as CFO of Human Longevity, the genomics and cellular therapy company, and then as CFO of GreatCall, a provider of connected health products and services. After GreatCall he became Managing Director of Corza Health, a medtech business he helped to start under GTCR’s Leaders Strategy, the private equity firm’s model of backing an executive team to build a company through acquisitions.

That GTCR connection led him to Experity. GTCR acquired Experity in January 2022, and in July of that year Berning joined as Chief Corporate Development Officer to lead its M&A work. In January 2023 the company named him Chief Financial Officer, succeeding Rob Rueckl, who had held the role for four years and moved to an internal business partner position. The company framed the change around an accelerated growth phase in its investment cycle, and said that as CFO Berning would continue its M&A initiatives, lead financial planning, and serve as the financial liaison between Experity’s creditors and board of directors.

He remains Chief Financial Officer under chief executive Bobby Ghoshal and executive chairperson David Stern, who was CEO when Berning was appointed.
