Executive Summary

Brett Caine is Chief Executive Officer of Airship, the customer engagement platform that began as Urban Airship in Portland, Oregon in 2009 and built its business on mobile push notifications. He took over in October 2014 after roughly a decade at Citrix, where he ran the online services business behind products such as GoToMeeting, and he has since steered the company through a rebrand, a run of acquisitions and a repositioning from a push-notification specialist into a broader mobile-first experience platform that Gartner has placed in its Magic Quadrant for multichannel marketing hubs.

Career Highlights

  • Chief Executive Officer of Airship since October 2014, appointed President & CEO and a board member of what was then Urban Airship.
  • Led the company through its June 2019 rebrand from Urban Airship to Airship and acquisitions including Accengage, Apptimize, ReplyBuy and Gummicube.
  • Senior Vice President and General Manager of Citrix’s Online Services Division from October 2007, according to Citrix’s 2013 proxy statement.
  • President of Citrix Online from August 2004 to July 2005, after joining as Vice President, Worldwide Sales in March 2004.
  • Credited by Airship with growing Citrix Online’s revenue from $40 million to $600 million.

Professional Journey

Caine’s early career was in enterprise and telecom software, with executive positions at Clarify, Inc., Software.com and Openwave Systems. He joined Citrix Online, the web conferencing and remote access business, in March 2004 as Vice President, Worldwide Sales, and five months later was named its President. Citrix’s securities filings then trace him running the same business under changing names: Group Vice President of the Online Group from July 2005, and from October 2007 Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Online Services Division, which made him one of Citrix’s named executive officers. Over that period, by Airship’s account, the business grew from $40 million to $600 million in revenue and became one of the largest software-as-a-service operations in the world.

In October 2014 Urban Airship, then a five-year-old Portland company that had pioneered mobile push notifications, appointed him President and CEO and added him to its board; co-founder Scott Kveton had been chief executive until that July. “I’m thrilled to take the helm of Airship,” he said, “which has built an incredible brand and fast-growing business as the industry’s first-mover in mobile app engagement.” An MMA Global speaker biography from that period also listed him as a board member of Kareo and an advisor to mobile, SaaS and cloud startups.

Under Caine the company broadened beyond notifications. It acquired Paris-based mobile CRM provider Accengage and experimentation company Apptimize in 2019, the year it dropped “Urban” from its name, then SMS commerce company ReplyBuy in 2020 and app store optimisation firm Gummicube in 2022. Airship now describes itself as a cross-channel customer experience platform for mobile-first engagement, and in September 2026 it was named in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Multichannel Marketing Hubs for the second consecutive year. “Mobile is where customer loyalty is earned and revenue is accelerated,” Caine said in the announcement.
