Goldberg took a BA in political science at Boston University and began his career in commercial rather than technical roles, including strategic marketing at AMD and running worldwide sales at Cignal. In 2005 he co-founded GreatPoint Energy, where he served as Chief Operating Officer until 2013, working on catalytic technology for converting coal into natural gas and on the substantial financings such capital-intensive work demands. In the same year he co-founded Zafgen, a biotechnology company, and served on its board through 2016, a period covering its emergence as a public company. The same partner group was behind Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, later acquired by GlaxoSmithKline, and Coatue Corporation, a semiconductor company acquired by AMD; across all of them Goldberg’s role ranged from co-founder to public-company director. In 2013 he took on a single company full time.
