Executive Summary
Venkat Thiruvengadam is the founder, chief executive and a board member of DuploCloud, which automates the provisioning, deployment and compliance work that usually falls to DevOps teams. His founding premise came from inside a hyperscaler: as one of the original engineers on Microsoft Azure’s networking team, he watched Azure run millions of workloads with a comparatively small engineering staff, while an ordinary enterprise needed an engineer for every few dozen servers. DuploCloud, founded in 2018, set out to package that kind of automation for mainstream companies, and it is now repositioning the product around AI agents that take on routine infrastructure operations.
Career Highlights
- Founder, CEO and board member of DuploCloud since its founding in 2018.
- Raised a $32M Series B in November 2023, led by WestBridge Capital and StepStone Group with existing investor Mayfield, bringing total funding to $49.5M.
- Reported 700% annual recurring revenue growth since 2021 and more than 100 client brands at the time of that round.
- Joined Microsoft in 2008 as one of the founding engineers on the Azure networking team, writing significant parts of Azure’s compute and network controller stack.
- Principal Engineer at Zenefits before founding DuploCloud.
Professional Journey
Thiruvengadam earned an MS in Computer Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 2008 he joined Microsoft as one of the founding engineers on the Azure networking team, at a time when Azure was moving from a platform-only service to full infrastructure-as-a-service. He wrote significant parts of Azure’s compute and network controller stack and, as his company biography puts it, watched Azure grow from roughly a hundred servers to millions of nodes. He later worked as a Principal Engineer at Zenefits.
The contrast between those two environments became the business. “Inside Amazon and Azure, they manage millions of workloads with about a thousand engineers with the latest and greatest technology for security, scale and availability, while in an average enterprise every 50-odd servers require at least one engineer,” he told TechCrunch. He founded DuploCloud in 2018 to close that gap, building a platform that handles cloud provisioning, CI/CD and compliance controls such as SOC 2, HIPAA and FedRAMP across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. He positions it against the in-house DevOps teams and professional services firms that companies would otherwise pay to build the same thing, describing it as a platform engineering product one can buy rather than build.
By his account the company spent its first years building and only began going to market in earnest in the three years before 2023, as the pandemic pushed businesses towards cloud automation. In November 2023 DuploCloud raised a $32M Series B led by WestBridge Capital and StepStone Group, with Mayfield returning, for a total of $49.5M raised; he said at the time that ARR had grown 700% since 2021 and that revenue and the new funding gave the company several years of runway. Mayfield’s Navin Chaddha and Patrick Salyer and WestBridge’s Sumir Chadha now sit alongside him on the board.
He still sets DuploCloud’s technical direction and stays hands-on with its architecture. The current emphasis is agentic AI for DevOps: the company now markets its product as “The DevOps Agent Platform”, in which agents take on routine operations work under role-based access controls, audit trails and human approval, and he writes regularly on the shift from human-operated to AI-operated infrastructure teams.
