Professional Journey

Tovar took a business administration degree in finance and accounting at the University of Houston and began his professional life in law, practising corporate and securities work at Cooley Godward LLP — the Silicon Valley firm whose practice is built around technology companies, financings and public offerings. That is an unusual starting point for someone who now runs a security engineering company, and it shows in the shape of his later roles.

He moved in-house to NetScreen Technologies, the network security appliance company, as Chief Compliance Officer and Vice President of Corporate Development and Legal Affairs — a combination that put him across both the regulatory and the M&A sides of a fast-growing security business during the period before Juniper Networks acquired it.

From there he moved into operating leadership. As Chief Executive of Nominum he ran a DNS security and services company selling to carriers, a business whose value lay in seeing an enormous share of the world’s DNS queries and therefore being able to spot malicious infrastructure early; Akamai later acquired it. He also served as Executive Chairman of Badgeville, an enterprise engagement and gamification platform, which CallidusCloud acquired.

Appdome came in 2016, and Tovar is described consistently as its co-creator rather than simply its chief executive — a framing the company uses deliberately, reflecting his involvement in the product concept as well as the business. The original insight was that mobile app protection could be applied to a finished binary through automation rather than through SDK integration, which decouples the security roadmap from the mobile development backlog.

The platform has since widened well beyond app shielding into fraud prevention, bot defence, identity and anti-cheat, covering more than 400 attack use cases. The most recent strategic turn has been toward agentic AI. At Black Hat Europe in December 2025 Appdome introduced a SecOps Agent designed to monitor, evaluate, reason about and report on mobile threats autonomously, and to raise findings with stakeholders unprompted — Tovar’s argument being that Appdome’s threat dataset is large enough that the bottleneck is no longer collection but human analysis. The positioning has been recognised externally: Appdome took three Global InfoSec Awards at RSAC 2026 and a record 44 G2 badges in the Spring 2026 reports.
