Executive Summary
Thomas Harpointner is the founder and chief executive of AIS Media, Inc., an Atlanta digital marketing agency he launched in 1997 and has led without interruption since. AIS Media sits in an unusual position for an independent agency: it predates the search-marketing industry it now serves, having been founded in the year Google was still a Stanford research project, and it has stayed privately held rather than being rolled into one of the holding groups that absorbed most of its contemporaries. Harpointner’s role is principally strategic — he sets the agency’s direction and advises client brands on how to respond to shifts in technology, media and buyer behaviour — and he has spent the past several years steering the firm from conventional SEO and paid media toward optimisation for AI-mediated search, the discipline that has displaced classical ranking work. He is also one of the more frequently quoted independent agency principals in US business media, appearing as a commentator in Inc., Forbes, CNBC and Fox Business.

Professional Journey
Harpointner’s career began outside marketing altogether. In 1990 he became president of United Data Source, LLC, a supplier of investor data to major US stock brokerage firms — a business about the mechanics of moving structured information to institutional buyers rather than about advertising. That grounding in data distribution, rather than in creative or media buying, is the thread that runs through everything he built afterwards.
In 1994 he moved to CTG, the Computer Task Group, as a vice president. CTG was an established IT staffing and services firm, and the role placed him in enterprise technology delivery at exactly the moment the commercial internet was arriving. Three years later he left to start his own firm.
AIS Media was founded in Atlanta in 1997. Its timing is worth noting: the agency was operating before paid search existed as a channel, before organic search optimisation was a recognised profession, and well before the analytics infrastructure that now underpins both. Harpointner built the practice through each of those transitions in turn — banner advertising, then search engine optimisation, then paid search and programmatic media, then social and content — while keeping the company independent. Many agencies founded in that window were acquired by holding companies during the 2000s consolidation; AIS Media was not, and Harpointner has remained both owner and operator throughout.
The agency’s most recent repositioning is the one he has been most publicly associated with. As large language models and AI-generated answers began to intercept queries that would previously have produced a ranked list of links, the economics of conventional SEO changed. Harpointner moved AIS Media’s core offer toward optimising for AI-mediated discovery, and has used his media platform — commentary for Inc., Forbes, CNBC and Fox Business, plus conference appearances including the Found Conference — to argue the case publicly. The agency’s award record, more than 100 marketing awards including 2025 w3 Awards and a 2026 Communicator Award of Distinction, belongs to the firm rather than to him personally, but it is the clearest external measure of the practice he has assembled.
