Executive Summary

Stavros Papadopoulos is the founder and Chief Product Officer of Tile.ai, the Cambridge, Massachusetts company he founded in 2017 as TileDB. A computer scientist who came out of research at Intel Labs and MIT, he built TileDB around a single idea — that genomes, images, point clouds, time series and tables can all be represented as multi-dimensional arrays in one engine — and ran the company as CEO for nine years. In September 2026 he reshaped it: TileDB became Tile.ai, a governed data layer meant to make scattered enterprise data usable by AI agents in place, and he handed the CEO role to board director George Llado so that he could work full-time on product and vision.

Career Highlights

  • Founded TileDB, Inc. in 2017, out of a project at the Intel Science and Technology Center for Big Data, and served as its CEO for nine years.
  • Led the company’s $34M Series B in October 2023, led by AlleyCorp with participation from Two Bear Capital, Nexus Venture Partners, Intel Capital, Amgen Ventures and others.
  • Took TileDB’s array engine into population genomics, single-cell, imaging and geospatial work at life sciences and healthcare organisations.
  • In September 2026 led the rebrand to Tile.ai, stepped back from CEO to Chief Product Officer, and brought in George Llado, a former CIO of Alexion, as chief executive, alongside a strategic round led by Two Bear Capital with Amgen Ventures.
  • Before founding the company, Senior Research Scientist at Intel Labs and MIT, and Visiting Assistant Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Professional Journey

Papadopoulos is an academic by training. He earned his PhD in computer science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and spent two years as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Computer Science and Engineering at HKUST. He then moved to the United States as a Senior Research Scientist at Intel Labs and MIT.

It was there that he kept running into the problem TileDB was built to solve. As he describes it, a genome, a microscope slide, a LiDAR scan and a machine-learning feature set did not fit into relational tables, and each field had grown its own incompatible tools, so every domain was re-solving storage and scale and copying data between systems. His bet was that a multi-dimensional array, dense or sparse, was a single honest abstraction underneath all of it. TileDB grew out of a project at the Intel Science and Technology Center for Big Data, and he incorporated TileDB, Inc. in 2017, with Intel Capital among its first backers.

As CEO he built the company around an open-source array engine and a commercial platform on top of it, finding traction in data-heavy, regulated settings: population genomics, single-cell analysis, imaging, geospatial and machine learning, at pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, government and defence organisations. SEC filings show the company raising about $15.2M in 2020, and in October 2023 it closed a $34M Series B led by AlleyCorp, the firm founded by MongoDB co-creator Kevin Ryan, with Two Bear Capital, Nexus Venture Partners, Intel Capital, Lockheed Martin Ventures, Amgen Ventures and Verizon Ventures among the participants. At the time he was pitching TileDB as a “modern database” alternative to the sprawling modern data stack, and as a store for the vector embeddings behind generative AI.

By his own account, the arrival of AI changed what customers were asking for. Over roughly two years the question shifted from making complex data faster to making it usable by AI agents safely, where it already lived, without losing control over who could see what. He concluded that a storage engine was not the whole answer and that the company needed a layer spanning every system an enterprise runs. On 16 September 2026 TileDB rebranded as Tile.ai and introduced what it calls the Enterprise AI Data Substrate, in private preview with design partners in regulated industries. At the same time he stepped out of the chief executive role after nine years. George Llado, a TileDB board member since 2024 who previously held CIO roles at Merck and Alexion Pharmaceuticals, became CEO to drive commercial growth, and Papadopoulos became Chief Product Officer, a move he describes as stepping “into founder mode”. Two Bear Capital led a strategic round alongside the change, with Amgen Ventures participating. The TileDB array engine continues as an open-source project under its original name, and he remains on the board.
