Professional Journey

Naik was born in Mangaluru in 1971 and took his BBA at SDM College of Business Management there. The decade that followed was itinerant: two and a half years in Mumbai, another two and a half in the UAE, and then, in 1997, the move to the United States to study for an MBA at the University of Delaware. He worked for several years after that — Daijiworld’s profile names IBM Global Services, TMP Worldwide and Pfizer Inc. as the employers, though without titles or dates — before starting his own firm.

MResult was founded in 2004 with three or four people. Naik describes the founding goal in cultural terms rather than commercial ones: to build an organisation that was “rooted to the ground but ambitious, customer obsessed and people focused”. The business grew into enterprise analytics and decision sciences at a point when most large companies were still treating data as a reporting function rather than a decision-making one, and its concentration in pharmaceuticals and life sciences gave it a foothold in an industry where analytics is inseparable from regulation.

Two decades on, the firm has more than a thousand employees across five US states and three nations, with US headquarters in Mystic, Connecticut and Indian operations in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Mangaluru. Its service lines now run from data management and BI through data science and generative AI into intelligent automation and DevSecOps, with an AI Labs and “Lab to Factory” programme aimed at moving experiments into production.

Naik has been deliberate about where the Indian growth goes. Rather than concentrating headcount in the largest metros, he has pushed into tier-two cities — Mangaluru among them — creating jobs where graduates otherwise leave, and running programmes with local colleges to raise employability. He has spoken of plans to establish incubation centres to give young graduates cutting-edge skills and, as he puts it, ethical growth.

On failure he is unsentimental: “Setbacks are inevitable. If you have not faced any, it means you haven’t pushed yourself to your full potential. Avoiding failures means you are not taking risks, which is essential for building a company.” His advice to founders rests on three qualities — a hunger for success, open-mindedness, and resilience — the last of which he attributes to his upbringing in India.

Outside the company he is an aviation enthusiast with commercial pilot credentials and Instrument and Jet Type Ratings, which MResult notes makes him “available to clients wherever they might be”; an endurance runner who has completed the New York and Philadelphia marathons; and a philanthropist whose giving includes establishing the Naik Family Branch at the YMCA in Mystic, Connecticut. He mentors and invests in start-ups.
