Executive Summary
Scott Unger is co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kahua, an Alpharetta, Georgia company that makes construction project management and analytics software for owners of large capital programs in government, healthcare, education, commercial and energy. He co-founded Kahua in 2009 and has run it since, guiding its platform strategy around a configurable, low-code system that adapts to an owner’s own processes. It is his second construction-software venture: before Kahua he helped build Constructware, an early web-based project controls platform that Autodesk bought in 2006, and before that he came from the contracting side as co-founder of Nix-Unger Construction.
Career Highlights
- Co-founder and CEO of Kahua since its founding in 2009; signs the company’s SEC Form D filings as CEO and sits on its board.
- Kahua says its platform is trusted by 16 federal agencies to manage their capital programs, and it has been named to Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 list three times.
- Helped pioneer Constructware, one of the construction industry’s early web-based SaaS project controls platforms, acquired by Autodesk in March 2006 for approximately $45.7 million.
- Began his career as co-founder of the contractor Nix-Unger Construction.
Professional Journey
Unger started out in construction itself rather than software, as co-founder of Nix-Unger Construction. He then moved into construction technology with Constructware, where, according to Kahua, he helped pioneer one of the industry’s early web-based SaaS project controls platforms. Autodesk acquired Constructware, formally Emerging Solutions, Inc., in March 2006 for cash of about $45.7 million, folding its cost, bid and risk management capabilities into its Buzzsaw collaborative project management product.
He continued working in construction technology after the acquisition and in 2009 co-founded Kahua on a different thesis: that owners of capital programs needed a durable, configurable platform built for governance and accountability rather than rigid packaged software. Kahua has been founder-led ever since, with Unger as CEO and Brian Moore as President. The company raised outside capital through a series of private offerings reported to the SEC from 2013 onward, the most recent amended filing, in 2021, reporting about $16.4 million sold in an offering that began in 2019.
Under his leadership Kahua has leaned into the public sector and regulated markets. It describes its platform as trusted by 16 federal agencies, and its recent announcements include selection by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2025, an announcement in 2026 that it was the first FedRAMP-certified construction PMIS to enable AI within a secure federal boundary, and ISO 27001 and BSI Kitemark ISO 19650 certifications. When Kahua was named to the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 for the third time in November 2025, Unger credited “the trust of our customers and our reputation in the market to easily configure our platform to our clients’ unique needs.”
