Professional Journey

Molyneux began as a cancer genomics researcher at Toronto’s University Health Network while pursuing doctoral work in biomedical physics at the University of Toronto. The problem that redirected his career was mundane and universal: working on bone cancer, he needed to find out who else was working on the same thing, and the scientific literature offered no good way to do it. In 2010 he and his sister Amy, a technologist, built ScienceScape to solve it — an algorithmic system that tracked what was being published in a researcher’s field and surfaced it.

ScienceScape grew up inside the university’s Best Institute and later became Meta. In January 2017 the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative acquired it, an unusual transaction that Molyneux described at the time as bringing what they had built to the entire scientific community; it is remembered as the first acquisition of a company by a philanthropy expressly in order to give its technology and data away. He stayed on as general manager of Meta within CZI, reporting to Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, until September 2019.

Poppy followed immediately. Founded in Silicon Valley in 2019 with Elizabeth Caley — who had been chief operating officer and chief of staff at Meta and CZI — it drew in the original Meta team alongside people from Microsoft, Stanford and New York commercial real estate. Molyneux also spent a short period as an entrepreneur in residence at SRI International in 2020, working on biosensing and analytical technologies, and mentored AI and healthcare startups at the Creative Destruction Lab.

Poppy’s early work was pathogen and air-safety monitoring, which found immediate application in schools: programmes with Primary.Health and Head Start Oakland in 2023, and an alliance with CerroZone in February 2024 that produced a joint ASHRAE 241 toolkit. Dr. Marwa Zaatari, an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, joined the company in July 2024 and is now its chief engineer, and Alan Watts, a commercial real estate veteran, is chief commercial officer.

The commercial centre of gravity has since shifted toward energy. Having built an instrument that measures real ventilation rates, Poppy found that most buildings over-ventilate, and that proving it is worth money under regimes like New York’s Local Law 97 emissions requirements — a point Molyneux argued publicly in late 2024. The company now sells that as performance-based energy optimisation. The health line has not gone away: in December 2025 Poppy won an ARPA-H contract worth up to $39 million for the SCALE programme, applying real-time hazard detection to school air, and Daikin Applied invested that year to accelerate the smart HVAC work.
