Gainford trained as a computer scientist at Salem State University and took a master’s in computer software engineering at California State University in Sacramento, and his career has stayed close to engineering delivery rather than moving into general management.

Before Tyler he led engineering at Benefitfocus, the benefits administration platform, and ran public sector development at Infor. That second role is the more consequential one for what followed: government software has procurement cycles, compliance obligations and upgrade constraints that differ sharply from commercial enterprise software, and he had already worked inside them.

He joined Tyler in 2018 as vice president of development for the Public Safety Division — computer-aided dispatch, law enforcement records, mobile field operations — and was instrumental in driving product innovation in that division.

From 2021 his remit shifted from a single product division to the company-wide cloud programme. He served as vice president and then senior vice president of Cloud Strategy & Operations through 2024, and was subsequently appointed chief cloud officer. The work is the unglamorous core of Tyler’s strategy: establishing how cloud software is built, operated and deployed consistently across a portfolio assembled over decades and many acquisitions, so that migrating a county’s case management system is a repeatable exercise rather than a bespoke project.
