Brand management and digital asset management SaaSSt. Gallen, Switzerland

Roger Dudler is the founder and chief executive of Frontify, the brand management platform he started in St. Gallen, Switzerland in 2013. He came to it from a Swiss IT apprenticeship and a self-taught coding career rather than from a university or a business school, and built the first version as an internal tool to stop technical and creative teams talking past each other. Frontify now serves more than 2,500 brands including Uber, Microsoft, Volkswagen, Telefónica and Kühne und Nagel.

Executive Summary

Roger Dudler founded Frontify in St. Gallen, Switzerland in 2013 and has run it ever since. The company sells a brand management platform — brand portals, guidelines, asset libraries and templates in one place — to organisations large enough that keeping a brand consistent across thousands of people has become a real operational problem. Uber, Microsoft, Volkswagen, Telefónica and Kühne und Nagel are among more than 2,500 brands using it. What distinguishes Dudler from most enterprise-software founders is the route in: no university degree, a Swiss IT systems engineering apprenticeship, and a self-taught coding career at Swiss software companies. He built the first version of Frontify as an internal tool at a web agency to fix something that annoyed him — designers and developers unable to communicate about the same brand — and it turned out to be a product.

Career Highlights

  • Founder and chief executive of Frontify since 2013, headquartered in St. Gallen with offices in New York and London.
  • Grew the company to roughly 300 employees and around $50 million in annual recurring revenue by the time of its Series C.
  • Raised a roughly $50 million Series C led by Revaia in 2021, after a $50,000 angel round in 2013 and a Series A from Blossom Capital.
  • Backed at seed stage by Myke Naef, co-founder of Doodle, Thomas Düebendorfer, formerly of Google, and Cédric Waldburger of Tenderloin Ventures.
  • Author of “git - the simple guide”, one of the most widely read short introductions to git, and of the dark UI and colour themes used across the Eclipse IDE community.
  • Senior software engineer at the Swiss digital agency Namics AG immediately before founding Frontify.

Professional Journey

Dudler trained as an IT systems engineer through a Swiss apprenticeship rather than at university, picking up the foundations there and teaching himself to code afterwards. He attributes his eye for design — unusual in someone who came up through systems engineering — to his father, who did woodworking, miniatures, drawing and painting. He then spent several years as a developer at Swiss software companies, ending at the digital agency Namics.

The problem he ran into at the agency was mundane and universal: technical and creative teams could not communicate about the same brand. Designers held the intent, developers held the implementation, and the gap between them was filled with PDFs and email. He built an internal tool to close it. That tool, initially called Clarify, started attracting interest beyond the people it was built for.

The turning point was a talk at a Frontend Conference. The scheduled speaker cancelled, Dudler inherited the larger audience, and an attendee in the room responded to the demo with “Shut up and take my money!” He took the hint. Frontify was founded in 2013 and funded first with a $50,000 angel round, with Doodle co-founder Myke Naef among the backers — Naef later described him as a full-stack product builder with a clear vision who executed at blazing speed. A Series A from Blossom Capital followed, and the Series B took meetings with more than twenty investors before it closed.

The pandemic turned out to suit the product. Brand management had been a nice-to-have when everyone shared an office and could ask a colleague; when they did not, a single authoritative source for brand assets became necessary. Frontify has said that close to half its enterprise portfolio came from contracts started during that period, with one enterprise customer’s user count growing more than 200%. In 2021 Revaia led a Series C of roughly $50 million, at which point the company was around 300 people with about $50 million of annual recurring revenue.

Dudler describes his approach to running the company as craft-driven, with a low tolerance for people treating quality as somebody else’s problem — “It’s not an excuse to say it’s someone else’s responsibility” — and pairs it with a preference for human-led customer success and democratic decision-making, loosened deliberately during crises. He has stayed technical throughout: his GitHub account still lists Frontify AG and St. Gallen, and the git guide he wrote years before founding the company remains one of his most-read pieces of work.

Education

No degree-granting institution is on record. Dudler completed an IT systems engineering apprenticeship in Switzerland and is otherwise self-taught as a developer and designer; no source located names the training company or vocational school that ran the apprenticeship, so no education entry is recorded rather than inventing an institution.
