Executive Summary
Rob Gurzeev is chief executive and co-founder of CyCognito, a cybersecurity company built on an inversion of how most security tooling works. Conventional vulnerability management starts from an inventory the organisation already has and works through a list; CyCognito starts from the outside with almost nothing, discovers the internet-facing estate an organisation does not know it owns — the sprawl of networks, web applications, cloud services and APIs accumulated through growth and acquisition — then tests it autonomously by simulating real attacks and surfaces only what is both exploitable and urgent. The logic comes directly from Gurzeev’s own background: he spent five years in Israel’s Unit 8200, rising to chief technology officer of the intelligence corps’ product department, where the work was learning a great deal about an adversary organisation starting from very little. He founded CyCognito in 2017 with Dima Potekhin to apply that discipline on behalf of defenders.

Professional Journey
Gurzeev’s career began in the Israeli Intelligence Corps’ Unit 8200, where he spent five years working on the automated collection of intelligence about criminal and terrorist groups. The formative problem there is one of expansion from scarcity: given a name, a number or a single artefact, establish the full shape of an organisation and where it is weak. He rose to become chief technology officer of the product department, responsible for what the unit actually built.
He then moved into the private sector at C4 Security as Director of Offensive Security and head of research and development, leading the development of offensive security capability for commercial and intelligence customers. C4 Security was acquired by Elbit Systems.
In 2017 he and Dima Potekhin founded CyCognito. The insight he has described is that the expansion-from-scarcity method he had practised against adversaries is exactly what an attacker does to a corporation, and that no defender was doing it to themselves at scale. CyCognito’s platform therefore takes the attacker’s view by design, running autonomous discovery and testing across an organisation’s external footprint rather than auditing an inventory the organisation supplies.
The company grew quickly into what became known as the external attack surface management category, and by late 2021 was reporting 400 per cent annual revenue growth and a customer base including Colgate-Palmolive, Emerson, Tesco and the State of California. That December it raised a 100 million dollar Series C led by The Westly Group, bringing the total raised to 153 million dollars. Gurzeev has continued to lead the company as chief executive, and CyCognito has positioned itself around external exposure management, staffed as its own materials put it by former intelligence operatives alongside conventional security leaders.
