Professional Journey
Nothing published by Campbell Scientific or in the press reviewed for this profile describes Smart’s career before 2023. The account here starts with his appointment.
Campbell Scientific began in 1974, when Eric and Evan Campbell started it in the family home in Logan with a laser anemometer. The company has long described itself as a worldwide leader in dataloggers. It has made more than 391,000 of them since the first in 1975, and it has expanded into sensors, communications and cloud data management for environmental, infrastructure and energy customers in many countries. Paul D. Campbell was president for 23 years until 2015, when Rob Campbell took over after 13 years running the subsidiary Juniper Systems.
In 2023 the company appointed Smart as president, and Rob Campbell continued as CEO. Smart’s first years in the role included a large physical expansion. Ground was broken in March 2024 on a manufacturing building of more than 82,000 square feet on the north side of the Logan headquarters, and a ribbon-cutting was held in 2025. Speaking at that opening, Smart described Campbell Scientific as a provider of critical data for systems that give advance warning of severe weather, protect critical infrastructure, support the deployment of renewable energy and improve understanding of climate and meteorology. He cited the company’s recent update to the automated surface observing stations at major US airports. In the same period the company launched its CampbellCloud platform and marked its 50th anniversary.
In February 2026 Smart wrote an opinion piece for the Deseret News arguing that the National Center for Atmospheric Research should be preserved. He pointed to the role of its research in aviation weather tools, air-quality and wildfire-smoke tracking and snowpack planning in Utah. He also noted that companies like Campbell Scientific build on that public research.
