Executive Summary

Patrick O’Connor founded Gatekeeper in 2010 and has run it through three entirely different company types: a consultancy, a bootstrapped software product, and since October 2023 a private-equity-backed platform business. Gatekeeper sells Vendor and Contract Lifecycle Management — the discipline of knowing what a company has actually signed, with whom, on what terms, and what risk those counterparties carry. It is an unglamorous problem that large organisations have historically handled with a shared drive and a spreadsheet, and it becomes acute precisely when it is too late: at renewal, at audit, or when a supplier fails. O’Connor’s distinctive move was to argue that vendor management and contract management are the same problem rather than two adjacent ones, and to build a category — VCLM — around that convergence. His background is unusual for the field. He came up through Channel Islands telecoms rather than through enterprise software or law, and had already founded and sold an e-commerce agency, Ominor, at a reported £7.9 million valuation, before starting Gatekeeper. He remains CEO and founder after the Vista investment, and has since pushed the company hard into agentic AI, winning the Vista Endeavor Fund’s Gen AI Innovation Award for the most impactful AI implementation across Vista’s enterprise portfolio.

Career Highlights

  • Founded Gatekeeper in 2010 and has led it at every stage since, from consultancy through bootstrapped start-up to private-equity-backed platform.
  • Secured a strategic growth investment from Vista Equity Partners, announced 17 October 2023, remaining CEO and Founder; the company had more than 300 customers at that point.
  • Founded and sold Ominor Ltd, an e-commerce agency, at a reported valuation of £7.9 million.
  • Won the Vista Endeavor Fund Gen AI Innovation Award for the most impactful AI implementation across Vista’s enterprise portfolio.
  • Repositioned Gatekeeper as an AI-first business, with the stated internal test of asking whether AI can solve a problem before adding headcount, process or complexity.
  • Built a platform rated 4.5 on G2 and 4.7 on Software Advice, serving financial services, healthcare, software, biotechnology and non-profit customers.
  • More than twenty years of contract and commercial negotiation experience, predominantly in IT and technology.

Professional Journey

O’Connor took a BSc (Hons) in Music Technology at London Metropolitan University between 1994 and 1998 — a degree that has nothing obvious to do with the career that followed, and which is worth noting mainly because it means he arrived in technology through interest rather than through a conventional computer-science pipeline.

His career began at Jersey Telecom, the Channel Islands telecoms operator, first as an IT consultant and then as operations manager. Running operations at a small national telco is a particular education: the organisation is complex enough to have real vendor and contract exposure but small enough that one person can see all of it, which is the vantage point from which the problem Gatekeeper later addressed becomes visible. He then moved to Payoffshore.com as business development manager, securing contracts with financial institutions and building a partner reseller programme, and afterwards to a business recorded as Coconut as business development director, winning contracts with large corporations and internet service providers.

The pattern through all of it is the commercial side of technology deals: negotiating them, structuring them, managing the counterparties. He accumulated, by his own count, more than two decades of contract and commercial negotiation experience predominantly in IT and technology — which is the credential that actually matters for what he built next.

Before Gatekeeper he founded two companies of his own, Optimal Solutions Ltd and Ominor Ltd. Ominor was an e-commerce agency that grew substantially and was sold at a reported valuation of £7.9 million. That exit gave him the independence to start Gatekeeper in 2010 without needing outside capital, which shaped the company’s first decade decisively.

Gatekeeper began as a consultancy and became a product. Bootstrapping meant it had to be sold profitably from early on, which in turn meant building for a real buyer with a budget rather than for a market thesis — and it meant O’Connor kept full control of the direction for thirteen years. The direction he chose was the convergence argument: that managing vendors, managing contracts and managing third-party risk are one workflow, not three, and that the software category should reflect that. Gatekeeper became one of the principal advocates for VCLM as a category name, positioning against both pure contract-lifecycle tools and pure third-party-risk tools.

By October 2023 the company had more than 300 customers across financial services, healthcare, software, biotechnology and the non-profit sector, and Vista Equity Partners — which specialises in enterprise software — announced a strategic growth investment. The release was explicit that O’Connor remained CEO and Founder, and Vista’s René Yang Stewart characterised Gatekeeper as a founder-led business with a leadership position in a large and growing market. Gatekeeper is headquartered in London; O’Connor himself remains based in Jersey.

The period since has been dominated by artificial intelligence, and O’Connor has taken a harder line on it than most. Gatekeeper’s stated internal test is to ask whether AI can solve a problem before adding headcount, process or complexity, and his own framing is that the goal is AI that performs the work rather than AI that helps with it — a distinction between automation and assistance that most vendors blur. The approach was recognised inside Vista’s own portfolio with the Endeavor Fund’s Gen AI Innovation Award for the most impactful AI implementation across its enterprise companies. He has been consistent in describing this as work done alongside customers rather than in isolation, and continues to write regularly on Gatekeeper’s blog.
