Executive Summary

Michael Wynn is President of Sunshine Ace Hardware, a family-owned home improvement retailer based in Naples, Florida. His grandfather founded it in 1958, and he has led it since 2005 as the third generation. Over that period the business has grown into one of Florida’s largest family-owned home improvement retailers and one of Ace Hardware’s top ten franchisees in the United States. It now has 17 locations and more than 500 employees and has added commercial and in-home service lines. He is also chairman of Wynn Family Companies. He has spent much of his civic effort on family-business succession, through a conference he co-founded in 2022, and on higher education, as a trustee and then chair of Florida Gulf Coast University.

Career Highlights

  • President of Sunshine Ace Hardware since 2005, leading a period of expansion to 17 locations and more than 500 employees.
  • Chairman of Wynn Family Companies, whose businesses have served Southwest Florida since 1938.
  • Launched Ace Handyman Services of Southwest Florida, sending tradespeople into customers’ homes as demand shifted from do-it-yourself to do-it-for-me.
  • Appointed to the Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees in March 2022, chaired it from 2024 to 2025, and served until January 2026.
  • Co-founded the Resnick-Wynn Family Business Conference in 2022. Its keynote speakers have included Steve Forbes, Jon Tisch and Alan Hassenfeld.

Professional Journey

His first job, he told Florida Trend, was bagging groceries at the family’s small grocery store on Fifth Avenue. He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of South Florida and later an MBA at Florida Gulf Coast University, completed in 2005.

That same year he became President of Sunshine Ace Hardware. The company’s own description credits him with an ambitious growth period, and the store count has kept rising: 15 hardware, paint and gift stores with four more in development in early 2024, and 17 locations by 2026. The company is one of Ace Hardware’s top ten franchisees in America. It has also moved beyond the shop floor, with a B2B division for commercial customers, a “Helpful Hub” offering services such as screen repair, key cutting and assembly, and Ace Handyman Services of Southwest Florida. Wynn launched the handyman division as customers increasingly wanted work done for them rather than supplies to do it themselves. He also chairs Wynn Family Companies, the family’s wider group of businesses in Southwest Florida.

Beyond the company, Wynn has worked on the problem that faces every multi-generation business: succession. In 2022 he co-founded the Resnick-Wynn Family Business Conference, held annually in partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University, which has brought speakers such as Steve Forbes, Jon Tisch of Loews Hotels and Alan Hassenfeld of Hasbro to Southwest Florida. He joined FGCU’s Board of Trustees in March 2022 by gubernatorial appointment and became its chair in February 2024. He led the 13-member governing board until the end of 2025 and left the board in January 2026. As of 2024 he was also second vice chair of the NCH Healthcare System Board of Trustees, a board member of Leadership Florida and a member of the Florida Council of 100.
