Healthcare data analytics — real-world data and real-world evidence platformsGreater Philadelphia, PA27+ years experience

Mark Brosso founded PurpleLab in 2017 and leads it as Chief Executive Officer. Its HealthNexus platform is a no-code analytics environment over real-world healthcare data — medical claims and provider information — that lets pharmaceutical, payer and provider teams build real-world evidence on therapeutic performance and cost without writing queries. It is his third healthcare data company: he founded Health Market Science in 1999 and sold it in 2007, and built Aileron Solutions, which IMS Health acquired in 2014.

Executive Summary

Mark Brosso founded PurpleLab in 2017 and runs it as Chief Executive Officer. The company’s HealthNexus platform is a no-code analytics environment sitting over real-world healthcare data — medical claims, provider records — designed so that a pharmaceutical brand team, a payer analyst or a health system can build real-world evidence about how a therapy actually performs and what it actually costs, without needing a data engineer to write the query. The bottleneck PurpleLab attacks is not data availability but data usability: the claims exist, and the people who need answers from them cannot get at them. Brosso has spent more than twenty-five years on variations of that problem across three companies he started himself, beginning with Health Market Science in 1999, which he sold in 2007 at a $55 million enterprise value, and continuing through Aileron Solutions, acquired by IMS Health in 2014.

Career Highlights

  • Founded PurpleLab in 2017 and built HealthNexus, a no-code real-world data analytics platform for healthcare.
  • Raised a $40 million Series B announced on 12 September 2022, led by Primus Capital with existing investor Edison Partners participating, after four straight years of triple-digit growth.
  • Obtained Qualified Entity certification for PurpleLab from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a regulatory designation granting access to Medicare claims data for performance measurement.
  • Founded Health Market Science in 1999, grew it from a one-person startup through multiple financings to Inc. 500 honours in 2004 and again in 2005, and sold it in 2007 at a $55 million enterprise value.
  • Founded Aileron Solutions, LLC, acquired by IMS Health, now IQVIA, in 2014.
  • Built more than twenty-five years of specialisation in real-world healthcare data across three ventures of his own.
  • Works as an angel investor, board director and adviser to early-stage companies alongside running PurpleLab.

Professional Journey

Brosso studied marketing at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania and took an MBA there at the John L. Grove College of Business. His career has been a single long argument with the same industry problem, restated three times as the technology and the market moved.

The first attempt was Health Market Science, founded in 1999. He started it alone and built it into a healthcare provider data business serving pharmaceutical and life sciences customers who needed accurate, compliant information about who prescribers actually were and where they actually practised — an unglamorous problem with severe regulatory consequences when got wrong. The company raised multiple rounds, made the Inc. 500 in both 2004 and 2005, and was sold in 2007 at an enterprise value of $55 million. Brosso stepped down as CEO at the sale. Health Market Science went on to be acquired by LexisNexis Risk Solutions in January 2015, long after his involvement had ended.

His next venture was Aileron Solutions, LLC, which IMS Health — now IQVIA, the dominant player in healthcare data — acquired in 2014. Selling into IMS is a particular kind of validation: the acquirer is the company that defines the category.

PurpleLab followed in 2017. Brosso has described its origin in personal terms, as growing out of his own experience with the healthcare system and a conviction that modern medicine needed more clarity, more connection and more real-world evidence. The technical premise was that the real-world data industry had solved acquisition and not access. Claims data was available; extracting an answer from it required specialists, which meant the people with the clinical and commercial questions were permanently one handoff away from their own data. HealthNexus was built as a no-code platform so those people could ask directly.

The company grew at triple-digit rates for four consecutive years and secured Qualified Entity certification from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — a designation that permits use of Medicare claims data for provider performance measurement, and a meaningful barrier to entry. In September 2022 Primus Capital led a $40 million Series B, with existing backer Edison Partners participating, earmarked for acquiring new data assets, product development and hiring. Brosso framed the round around conversion rather than collection: the work was building the infrastructure and tools that turn real-world data into real-world evidence, and accelerating how fast customers adopt it.

Alongside PurpleLab, Brosso invests in and advises early-stage companies and serves as a board director, which he describes as directing his entrepreneurial energy toward supporting other founders.
