Professional Journey

Talcott started UpLift with Redesign Health, which is also one of UpLift’s investors. In an interview Redesign published in April 2022, when UpLift was just over a year old, he set out the idea as fixing pain points on both sides of mental health care. For patients the aim was to make professional care easy and affordable to use through their insurance. For therapists and psychiatrists, many of whom run small practices, the aim was to make it simpler to get paid by insurers and to find clients. In the same interview he said he had studied architecture and was still a fan of design and user experience.

UpLift’s model puts each client with a primary mental health provider, backed by a care team, inside a network that has contracts with payers. The company lists partners including Anthem, CareFirst, Cigna, Florida Blue, Optum, UnitedHealthcare, Medicare and DC Medicaid. It raised money from Redesign Health, B Capital Group, Ballast Point Ventures, Kapor Capital, Canvas Ventures, Front Porch Ventures and Declaration Partners, and it reports that clients can attend a first session in 1.3 days on average.

On 30 April 2025 Teladoc Health announced that it had completed the acquisition of UpLift Health Technologies, Inc. for $30.0 million in cash, with up to a further $15.0 million in contingent earnout. Teladoc said the deal would help its BetterHelp segment serve consumers who want to use their covered benefits for virtual mental health. UpLift then had in-network relationships covering more than 100 million lives and more than 1,500 mental health professionals. Talcott said Teladoc was uniquely placed to accelerate UpLift’s mission and that health plan partners, patients and providers would benefit from its scale.

Under the deal he kept running UpLift as chief executive, responsible for the provider network, quality oversight, patient outcomes and insurance coverage administration. UpLift’s website now describes the service as backed by BetterHelp and still lists him as Founder and CEO.
