Professional Journey

Adams’s career has been spent on one side of a single problem: the administrative machinery of American health insurance, and how much of it can be automated. He began on the payer side and at the vendors serving it, working at Cigna and at Edifecs, the healthcare interoperability company — experience HealthEdge’s own account of him credits with giving him a direct understanding of where health plans actually lose time and money.

He then became Chief Technology Officer of UST Global Healthcare, the healthcare arm of the IT services group UST, leading its IT strategy and business direction. In 2016 he co-founded UST HealthProof, a business built on a different premise from a conventional software vendor: rather than sell a health plan a platform and leave it to run it, UST HealthProof would run the core administrative operations itself, on modern technology, as a service. That model — business process as a service, or BPaaS — was unusual in healthcare when he started, and HealthEdge describes him as a pioneer of it. He ran the company as chief executive from founding, and it became a global organisation in its own right.

The two companies were already closely entangled. UST HealthProof delivered its services on HealthEdge’s payer software and had become one of HealthEdge’s largest customers over a partnership of several years.
