Executive Summary

Johnny Campbell is the chief executive and co-founder of SocialTalent, an Irish company that trains recruiters and hiring managers and now sells AI tools for job interviews. He started the company in 2011 with fellow recruiter Vincent O’Donoghue, after more than a decade as a financial recruiter. It began as two practitioners sharing better ways to find candidates. Under his leadership it has become a platform for large global employers. SocialTalent’s position is that the interview is the most important and least reliable part of hiring, and that interviewers can be trained. Its AI product, Cara, is built on that methodology rather than added to someone else’s software.

Professional Journey

Campbell started as a financial recruiter in 1998 and worked in that field for more than a decade. In 2011 he and Vincent O’Donoghue, another recruiter, founded SocialTalent in Ireland. The company says it began with “two recruiters sharing smarter ways to find talent”. The early focus was sourcing: teaching recruiters to find candidates who are hard to find. Campbell’s 2016 conference biography describes the company as the world’s largest online recruitment training business, with more than 800 clients in over 70 countries. It says he “recruits vicariously” through the nearly 10,000 sourcers the company had trained by then.

The business then widened from sourcing into training across the whole hiring process, including interviewing, onboarding, leadership and internal mobility. It now runs structured programmes such as the TA Academy, a recruiter certification, and License to Hire, which trains hiring managers to interview well. Campbell is also one of the company’s course experts, with material on recruiting strategy, sourcing and talent acquisition leadership.

The company now calls itself a Hiring Intelligence platform. Its argument is that candidates arrive AI-assisted and recruiting teams are smaller, so more of each hiring decision rests on the interview. SocialTalent focuses on the interviewer rather than the candidate. It combines its hiring methodology and training with Cara, an AI tool that helps plan and run interviews and gives interviewers private feedback on how they ran them. The company says Cara assesses how the interview was conducted, never the candidate. Its named customers include Siemens, Cisco, Avanade, GitLab, Electronic Arts, Nokia, Citrix and HelloFresh. O’Donoghue remains with the company as Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer.
