Executive Summary

Jeff Chambers is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lumin Digital, which sells a cloud-native digital banking platform to banks and credit unions. He founded it in 2016, and in 2026 it passed a $1.6 billion valuation. Unusually for a venture-backed software company, most of the new money came from its own customers, and clients and employees hold the large majority of the company. An engineer by training, Chambers has spent his career in digital banking software. Lumin is his second founding: he co-founded Architect Digital Banking in 2000, and he was Chief Operating Officer of Alkami before starting Lumin.

Career Highlights

  • Founded Lumin Digital in 2016. It launched what it describes as the industry’s first cloud-native banking platform in 2018.
  • In July 2026 announced a valuation above $1.6 billion and more than $115 million in new capital with no debt, over $70 million of it from client financial institutions.
  • Grew Lumin to more than 8 million end users spending over 6 million hours a month on the platform. The company says it has never lost a client and reported a Net Promoter Score of 94 in 2026.
  • Joined Alkami as Chief Operating Officer in 2013, as it launched its early digital banking suite.
  • Co-founded Architect Digital Banking in 2000. By his account it was acquired by Fiserv in 2015 and remains in use.

Professional Journey

Chambers describes himself as an engineer “by training and passion”, and his whole career has been in digital banking. In 2000 he co-founded Architect Digital Banking, which he says Fiserv later acquired and still uses. In 2013 he joined Alkami as Chief Operating Officer, just as it launched its early-modern digital banking suite.

As banking technology moved to the cloud, he saw a gap. In 2016 he and a small group of colleagues set out to build Lumin Digital’s cloud-native platform. The premise, in his words, was simple: banks and credit unions needed better technology. Their platforms were ageing and unreliable, updates were infrequent and often flawed, and outages were routine. PSCU, now Velera, was an early supporter and helped Lumin start out as an independent company. Lumin went to market in 2018, shipping new capabilities weekly with almost no downtime, where much of the industry releases once or twice a year.

Chambers has linked the product to how he built the company. He calls Lumin a participatory, bottom-up organisation with “hyper-transparency”, designed to recruit capable people and point them at the execution problems that financial institutions talk about but rarely solve. On funding, he says Lumin chose patient capital over investors who would want an exit within a few years, and made sure the people closest to the work would own it.

In July 2026, after the company’s first client conference, Lumination, he announced that Lumin had passed a $1.6 billion valuation, raising more than $115 million in new capital with no debt. More than $70 million came from the financial institutions that use the platform. He pointed to an independent S&P Global study finding that institutions on Lumin generate $12.8 million more in value over five years than on their previous platform. He framed the next decade around artificial intelligence reshaping how financial institutions operate.

Education

No degree or institution was found in the sources reviewed. Chambers describes himself as an engineer by training.
