Pai began his career in telecommunications and networking infrastructure, working as an engineering manager and software architect at Sonus Networks, a voice-over-IP and carrier signaling company, before joining NetDevices as Principal Architect. In 2006 he founded Verivue, a video delivery and content networking company, where he served as Vice President of Systems Architecture. Akamai Technologies acquired Verivue on December 4, 2012 for $30.9 million in cash, a figure Akamai disclosed in its subsequent quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Pai stayed on at Akamai as Chief Architect of Carrier Products and Strategy, working on the technology Akamai sold into network operators.

He left to found Uptycs in January 2016, on a thesis that the telemetry problem in security resembled the observability problem in large-scale distributed systems: rather than bolting separate tools onto laptops, containers, and cloud accounts, a single structured data pipeline could serve detection, compliance, and audit across all of them. Uptycs built its platform on that premise, normalizing security telemetry from endpoints through cloud control planes into one queryable store, and positioning the result as a combined CNAPP and extended detection and response (XDR) offering.

Under Pai the company raised roughly $93 million across its venture rounds, including a $50 million Series C led by Norwest Venture Partners with Sapphire Ventures and ServiceNow Ventures participating; other backers include ForgePoint Capital, Comcast Ventures, Genacast Ventures, and Founder Collective.
