Executive Summary

Frederic Laluyaux is co-founder, president and CEO of Aera Technology, a company building what it calls decision intelligence: software agents that make and execute operational decisions, mostly in supply chain and planning, rather than just reporting on them. He founded Aera in 2017 with Shariq Mansoor after running Anaplan, the cloud planning company he led from 2012 through its growth to a $1 billion valuation. Aera is the next step in the same argument. Planning systems and analytics had improved, he has said, but decisions still moved too slowly through companies built as deep pyramids of people and tools. Aera has since been named a Leader in Gartner’s first Magic Quadrant for Decision Intelligence Platforms.

Career Highlights

  • Co-founded Aera Technology in 2017 with Shariq Mansoor and serves as its president and CEO and a board member.
  • Aera reports that its platform has executed more than 50 million enterprise decisions, with automation levels often above 90%.
  • Aera was named a Leader in Gartner’s first Magic Quadrant for Decision Intelligence Platforms.
  • Chief executive of Anaplan from 2012, growing it to 650 employees, $100 million in revenue and a $1 billion valuation in four years; Anaplan listed on the NYSE in October 2018.
  • Earlier held leadership roles at ALG Software and SAP.
  • Founded his first startup at 23.

Professional Journey

Laluyaux has described his career as building and scaling enterprise software companies. He founded his first startup at 23, then held leadership roles at ALG Software and SAP. Both businesses sat in enterprise performance management, the software finance teams use for budgeting, forecasting and cost analysis.

In 2012 he became chief executive of Anaplan, then an early-stage cloud planning company. Anaplan’s 2014 Form D lists him as an executive officer and director. Over roughly four years he grew it into a global SaaS business of 650 employees, $100 million in revenue and a $1 billion valuation. By the time Anaplan went public in October 2018, its prospectus referred to him as its former chief executive officer.

Running a planning company showed him the gap Aera was built to close. Plans and analytics were getting better, he has said, but the decisions that followed them still passed slowly through layers of people and processes, even as those decisions were becoming more granular and closer to the point of impact. In 2017 he and Shariq Mansoor, now Aera’s CTO, founded Aera Technology to automate that layer. The company’s software recommends and executes operational decisions and learns from the results. Its board includes investors from Georgian Partners, NewView Capital and DFJ Growth, and it operates from offices in Mountain View, San Francisco, Paris and Bucharest. Aera says the platform has now executed more than 50 million enterprise decisions, and Gartner named it a Leader in the first Magic Quadrant for the decision intelligence category.
