Executive Summary

Frank Vella has run Constant Contact since April 2021. The company is one of the oldest names in small business marketing — founded in Waltham, Massachusetts in 1995, long before the category had a name — and by the time Vella arrived it had passed through Endurance International and into the hands of the private equity firms Clearlake Capital and Siris Capital, who hired him to run it as a standalone business. His job since has been to take a brand with three decades of trust among small business owners and nonprofits and rebuild the product and the economics underneath it as a modern, AI-assisted SaaS platform, funded through a deliberately staged capital strategy rather than a single leveraged bet. He talks about the customer base in unusually plain terms — the grit and grind of small business owners — and that framing is closer to his own history than it sounds: he is the son of Maltese immigrants and started his career carrying a Xerox sales bag.

Career Highlights

  • Named Chief Executive Officer of Constant Contact on 14 April 2021 by owners Clearlake Capital Group and Siris Capital Group, alongside Michael Pellegrino as Chief Financial Officer.
  • Named an EY US Entrepreneur Of The Year 2026 New England Award finalist in April 2026, one of 24 finalists chosen by an independent judging panel.
  • Has run Constant Contact through a staged capital strategy aimed at turning a legacy brand into an independent SaaS business; the platform is reported to send on the order of 500 million emails a day.
  • Chief Executive Officer of Information Builders from 2018 to 2021, the data and analytics platform later acquired by TIBCO Software.
  • Chief Revenue Officer of BlueJeans Network from 2016 to 2017.
  • Chief Operating Officer for North America at Virtustream, through its acquisition by EMC.
  • Roughly a decade in operating roles at Microsoft, plus senior roles at HP Enterprise, operating and financial management at GE Capital under Jack Welch and Gary Wendt, and a start in sales at Xerox.
  • Board member at Leadspace from 2020 to 2025.

Professional Journey

Vella took a BA at the University of Toronto and began in sales at Xerox — a training ground that produced a generation of enterprise software leaders, and one he credits with a specific lesson he still repeats, learned from an early mentor, about selling being fundamentally a human transaction rather than a technical one. From Xerox he moved to GE Capital during the Jack Welch and Gary Wendt era, taking on operating and financial management roles inside an organisation then famous for its management discipline.

Technology became the permanent home. He spent roughly a decade at Microsoft in senior operating roles and held senior leadership positions at HP Enterprise, before moving into the smaller, faster-moving end of enterprise software. At Virtustream, the enterprise cloud infrastructure company, he was Chief Operating Officer for North America and stayed through its acquisition by EMC. He then served as Chief Revenue Officer of BlueJeans Network, the video conferencing company, from 2016 to 2017.

His first chief executive role came at Information Builders, the long-established data and analytics software company, which he led from 2018 to 2021 as a private-equity-backed business; it was subsequently acquired by TIBCO Software. That combination — a mature brand, a private equity owner, and a mandate to modernise the business model — is exactly the brief he was hired for next.

Clearlake Capital and Siris Capital named him CEO of Constant Contact in April 2021, appointing Michael Pellegrino as CFO at the same time. Constant Contact’s challenge was neither awareness nor customer affection but relevance: a small business marketing platform competing against tools that had grown up cloud-native and were adding automation and AI faster. Under Vella the company has repositioned itself as an AI-powered marketing partner for small businesses and nonprofits, layering automation, social, SMS and e-commerce marketing onto the email franchise. In April 2026 EY named him one of 24 New England finalists for its Entrepreneur Of The Year award, with regional winners announced in Boston that June. Alongside the operating work he has served on the board of Leadspace and speaks frequently about mentorship, which he treats as an obligation passed down rather than a networking exercise.
