Khan’s career before Wanclouds was spent at Cisco Systems, where he moved through several technology leadership roles rather than a single track. He built the company’s worldwide data centre and cloud practice and served as general manager of the Emerging Markets Technology Practices organisation, a remit that put him in front of enterprise and service-provider customers outside Cisco’s established markets. His final assignment there was leading the global cloud automation and orchestration organisation — the group responsible for making Cisco’s cloud infrastructure programmable rather than hand-configured. That is the direct antecedent of everything Wanclouds sells.

He founded Wanclouds in 2015. The company’s own account of its origins is modest — a small group of cloud engineers — and its early positioning was cloud networking and migration services rather than packaged software. The shift toward a productised platform is visible in the 2021–2022 sequence: Wanclouds launched multi-cloud Disaster Recovery as a Service at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe in 2021, reached the IBM Cloud marketplace in March 2022, and returned to KubeCon Europe later in 2022 to debut VPC+ DRaaS with IBM Cloud Satellite functionality, which extended recovery orchestration to distributed and edge locations.
