Adylov was born to farmers in a small town in Kyrgyzstan and grew up during the economic collapse that followed the end of the Soviet Union — a childhood he has described in terms of electricity rationing and his mother, a doctor, going six months without pay. He worked on his parents’ farm until he was sixteen, when he won a George Soros grant to spend a year studying in the United States. His parents subsequently sold their home to buy him a one-way ticket to attend university in Hawaii, and he went on to study at the London School of Economics.

He entered finance after graduating, joining Goldman Sachs as an equity research analyst, then moving to a London-based hedge fund as an asset manager. He rose to become a partner at GLG, one of the world’s largest alternative investment firms, where he ran a $2 billion fund. Compliance functions sampled communications by keyword, which produced overwhelming false positives and missed anything phrased carefully. Management had no way to see conduct risk building. Behavox set out to treat the institution’s own data as a single analysable corpus, applying machine learning to detect misconduct, insider risk, and compliance failures with enough precision to be actionable rather than merely alarming.
